Today, we pause to honour and remember the Indigenous children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and the generations affected by these injustices. It is a day to reflect, to listen, and to learn.
At Royal City Nursery, we acknowledge the lands we are privileged to work on and the rich cultures and histories of the Indigenous communities who have been stewards of this land for generations. September 30 is not just a day; it is a commitment to awareness, education, and action in the pursuit of healing and justice.
We invite you to:
👉 Read or revisit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Released in 2015, following years of testimony from residential school survivors and others, the Calls to Action address areas including education, child welfare, health, justice, language and culture, media and commemoration.
👉 in Guelph — attend the Truth & Reconciliation Day After School Event (Guelph Civic Museum, September 30, 5pm - 8 pm)
Children, youth, and community members are invited to come together in the spirit of remembrance and renewal. The gathering will include a Sacred Fire, indoor and outdoor activities, and a special raptor presentation.
👉 Go to Brantford — visit the Woodland Culture Centre, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm - today the former Mohawk Institute will host cultural performances, film screenings, information booths and guest speakers throughout the day. There will also be a market with Indigenous artists, food and drinks.
👉 Tune in — at 8 pm local time across Canada, CBC Radio is hosting Reconciliation on the Record, featuring interviews with survivors, along with Pulitzer Prize–winning Cree journalist Connie Walker of the Indian Residential School Records Project at Toronto Metropolitan University. They will also discuss the current progress on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. (89.1 FM for CBC Kitchener-Waterloo)
