Fun Fact Friday!

Everybody loves the smell of fresh cut grass but did you know... that unmistakable scent is actually a chemical defense mechanism?
When grass blades are damaged they release organic compounds known as green leaf volatiles (GLV's) that act as an airborne distress signal and healing agent. Physical injury from a lawnmower or insects rupture the plant cells then compounds help seal the wounds, fight fungal infections and attract predatory insects that can destroy other insects which eat the grass.

So remember the next time you smell that familiar scent it's not there just for our pleasure! πŸ’š

We know that sunflowers make everyone happy, let's face it...who can resist those bright sunny faces 🌞 but do you know why they're called "sunflowers"? It's not because they resemble the sun but because their heads actually follow the sun! When young sunflowers are growing they will track the sun from East to West, this process is called heliotropism which helps them to grow larger. The largest sunflower ever recorded grew over 30 feet high!
Each sunflower head is actually made up of a combination of thousands of tiny flowers called florets.

August is sunflower season, so why not treat yourself to a beautiful bunch of sunshine today!

Do you want to see more Monarch's? Help them out by planting milkweed. Milkweed is the only host plant that the monarch butterfly will lay her eggs on as it is the only plant the caterpillars will eat. The eggs will hatch and the tiny caterpillar will eat & eat until it grows and when it's ready it will shed it's skin and form a chrysalis, that's where the metamorphosis begins and that tiny caterpillar emerges as a beautiful monarch butterfly. By also adding nectar rich flowers to your garden such as coneflower, liatris and zinnias to name a few you will be providing the adult butterflies with the energy they need to migrate.
Not sure what to plant, come on in and talk to one of our team members we can help you plan a beautiful butterfly garden that you and the butterflies will love. πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹

If you see Lady bugs in your garden consider yourself lucky...no need to spray insecticide because these guys are natural predators that consume other plant damaging insects like aphids and scale.
