New perennials in this morning, and we think this may be one of our favourite deliveries of the year!

Although we’re into August, a time thought to be the start of the ‘end of the season’, a majority of our perennials will keep going strong even into the fall 🍁!

We know that sunflowers make everyone happy, let's face it...who can resist those bright sunny faces 🌞 but do you know why they're called "sunflowers"? It's not because they resemble the sun but because their heads actually follow the sun! When young sunflowers are growing they will track the sun from East to West, this process is called heliotropism which helps them to grow larger. The largest sunflower ever recorded grew over 30 feet high!
Each sunflower head is actually made up of a combination of thousands of tiny flowers called florets.

August is sunflower season, so why not treat yourself to a beautiful bunch of sunshine today!

Do you want to see more Monarch's? Help them out by planting milkweed. Milkweed is the only host plant that the monarch butterfly will lay her eggs on as it is the only plant the caterpillars will eat. The eggs will hatch and the tiny caterpillar will eat & eat until it grows and when it's ready it will shed it's skin and form a chrysalis, that's where the metamorphosis begins and that tiny caterpillar emerges as a beautiful monarch butterfly. By also adding nectar rich flowers to your garden such as coneflower, liatris and zinnias to name a few you will be providing the adult butterflies with the energy they need to migrate.

Fun Fact Friday! 🧐
Did you know that the little black dots you sometimes see on the back of fern fronds are not bugs or disease?
They are called "sori" which are spore cases that ferns use to reproduce.
Unlike flowering plants ferns do not produce seeds, instead the sori release spores which look like a fine powder or dust into the air and when they land on a damp shady area they will grow new ferns.
So the next time you receive flowers with leatherleaf fern and see dots on the back don't be alarmed, they're not bugs!
