I was very fortunate recently to be gifted a couple of Joe Aucoin's original patterns in their original packaging.
Joe was a pioneering Cape Breton fly tyer from New Waterford who played a major role in shaping early Nova Scotia Atlantic salmon wet fly patterns, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s.
Joe is widely credited with originating and popularizing the original Bomber series of wet flies prior to 1929—distinct from the deer-hair dry flies known as Bombers today. His series included the Black Bomber, Silver Bomber, and Brown Bomber.
Here are two pristine examples of Joe's work, the Black Bomber and Thunder and Lightning.
I was born and raised in New Waterford myself so having these flies as a keep sake means a lot to me. When I received them it was a given that I was going to try to replicate them as close as I could to Joe's original style. I hope you all enjoy this little tribute to a true legend!
