Last week, we came into to discover that our two picnic tables, which had been chained up and locked, had been stolen overnight.
We know there is far more good in this world than there is bad, but this was especially disheartening to see.
Like many organizations, we are not immune to theft. However, this felt a little more personal. These tables weren’t merchandise or equipment - they were a simple space for our staff and volunteers to sit outside, enjoy a lunch break, share a coffee, and take a few moments to recharge.
Every day, our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to support the programs and services of Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, helping individuals and families facing challenges in our community. They give so much of themselves to others, and these picnic tables were one small way for them to enjoy a bit of sunshine and connection during their day.
We’re not sharing this to find those responsible. We’re sharing it as a reminder that behind every act of theft is an impact that extends far beyond the item taken. Sometimes what seems like “just a couple of tables” means something much more to the people who relied on them.
Despite moments like this, we remain grateful for the kindness, generosity, and support we see from our community every day. Those acts of goodness will always outweigh the disappointments.
