Some happy childhood smells stay with you forever. For me, it was flipping open a comic book and catching that unmistakable whiff of cheap pulp paper and ink. A good Prince Edward Island redware pottery jug, unmarked but carrying identical, distinct incised line decoration as that found on a marked jug in the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation collection.

This jug has the typical glaze flaking found on PEI wares but is in otherwise remarkably good condition with no hairlines, chips or repairs. There is a number 35 written on the underside that may be an original 35-cent price.

Upon re-opening tomorrow you’ll be greeted by this heavily-carved 1735 German Baroque oak marriage chest with deep-carved Gothic script to the front reading “AN GOTTES SEGEN IST ALLES GELEGEN”, an old Biblical saying which loosely translates to “Everything we get comes only with God’s blessing.” Seldom found with such an untouched original surface. www.finerthingsantiques.com

Dubbed “The Humourous Chest” these bureaus were offered by the famous luxury furniture brand Theodore Alexander of High Point, North Carolina, in the 1990s. Based on a 19th century Italian design and exceptionally well-crafted, with solid cast brass monkey head pulls and full-bodied cast monkeys mounted on the base. Available at Finer Things.
