Hi!

It’s me, saying thank you for letting me yap about food waste, food rescue, and sharing what food adventures you’ve been on!! It’s been a lot of fun.

I wonder if there’s anything you see on food rescue apps that you wonder what could be done with it?

I’d love to hear it.

This Flashfood App haul was such great value. I started with $6 worth of tomatoes and turned them into a whole lot of food. 🍅

I cut the tomatoes and saved the tops, then boiled down the tomatoes, blended them, and pressure canned six pints of tomato sauce. I had more space available in pantry than in my freezer, so preserving them this way made the most sense for me.

I also dehydrated the tomato tops and blended them into a powder that I can use to boost soups, sauces, and other meals. I had some parsley leftover from a previous Flashfood box, so I dehydrated that too and blended it with the tomato tops. Nothing wasted! I don’t even bother remove stems, it all dries and blends down.

I used some of the tomatoes to make tomato soup and added roasted garlic. I got 3 bulbs of garlic for just $0.50! I barely put a dent in them. I strained and blended the soup, and I like adding a little baking soda to my tomato soup to help neutralize some of the acidity.

My finds were:

🍅 Tomatoes — $6.00

🥩 4 pork chops — $7.46

🧀 Halloumi — $2.00

🥒 Cucumber — $1.00

🥖 Baguette — $0.50

🧄Garlic — $0.50

For the supper soup we used what was left of the tomatoes after canning, two pork chops, one pack of halloumi, some of the cucumber, and some of baguette. We didn’t finish the baguette, so I let it dry out and blended it into breadcrumbs to use another day.

So much food from ingredients that were inexpensive, on their way out, and were able to be rescued.

This supper came out to about $7 or $1.75 per person for our family of four.

This week’s Flashfood haul saved me more than I spent.

Here’s what I picked up:

Cheese was $104.97, I spent $45, saving $60.00 (on three 2.97 kg blocks!)

11 lbs of carrots marked down to $10.45, and I saved $10.50 (for 11 pounds)

Maryland crab cakes marked down to $5.74, so I saved $5.75

Total spent: $62.67

Total saved: $76.25

With 11 pounds of carrots, there’s no way we’ll eat them all fresh, so here’s how I preserve them:

Scrub them.

Chop them.

Blanch them.

Spread them on a sheet pan with parchment paper and freeze before transferring them to a freezer bag. Freezer bags are often reusable!

Blanching helps preserve their texture, flavour, and colour, and freezing them on a sheet pan first keeps them from turning into one giant frozen carrot blob.

I don’t peel my carrots because that’s where a lot of the nutrients are, but if I did, I’d dehydrate the peels and blend them into a powder to add to soups, stews, muffins, sauces, or homemade broth. Nothing goes to waste!

What’s the best deal you’ve found on Flashfood lately? 💚

Yesterday was a big day.

Bringing bread bags to life has taken years, because I wanted to bring the right bread bag to you, in the right way, with the right specs.

Thank you for sharing what you’d like in a bag, and trusting me to make it. The screenshots are only a sampling of the messages I’ve had asking about bags, I can’t even count how many people at markets ask for bread bags.

Large, sturdy, easy to close, made intentionally, gives back, and the highest quality fabric, yesterday we sold out of three colours.

I’m working on filling orders to get your bags and wraps to you.

If you didn’t get the colour you want this drop, I see you and hear you. There will be more bags coming and I’ll post again about the colours coming.

Thank you, so sincerely thank you. 💛🍞
