We talk a lot about making time. It’s one of the principles Locke & King was built on: creating timepieces that remind you to make your own.
For me, it was also about building a company that could fit the life I wanted to create. But Locke & King isn’t the only company I lead or help lead.
On a recent trip abroad for one of those other businesses, I found myself in northern Spain with my family, with a short side trip to Luxembourg to tour a mill.
On the way back, my flight was cancelled, so I had to scramble together a new route: a train to Paris, an overnight stay, then an early flight back to Bilbao.
I arrived at Gare de l’Est fully intending to head straight to the hotel and get to sleep. But then I stepped outside and remembered: I’m in bloody Paris. How often does that happen?
So I made time.
I found a spot by the river, sat on a patio, ordered an espresso and a glass of wine, and watched the city move around me.
Since a formative home-stay in the south of France when I was younger, that sort of combination, traveling, a solo pause, a busy patio, and watching a city move, has always felt restorative to me.
Then I got dinner, made it to the hotel, caught my flight, and got back to my family, the thing I truly looked forward to making time for.
But I’m glad I didn’t rush past the moment while I had it.
Make Your Own Time.
