Before the gold came the raven. 🖤

In alchemical imagery, the raven became associated with nigredo — the blackening — an early stage of the Great Work.

It represented decomposition and dissolution: the old material had to be broken down before it could become something new.
And I think that's where an ancient alchemical idea becomes very human.

We have our own nigredo seasons.
A relationship ends. A career disappears. An identity no longer fits. Something we were absolutely certain about suddenly isn't certain anymore.

When we're living through it, it can feel like everything is falling apart.
But what if sometimes... it's breaking open?

The raven wasn't simply an omen of darkness.
It could mark the moment the transformation had already begun.

Maybe that's why some endings look completely different when we see them from the other side.

I remember taking this photo so clearly.
The baby was skittish. There were so many people around, everyone trying to get his attention, and he wasn't quite sure about any of us.

So he tucked himself into Mom.
From there, he could look at all the people looking at him. He could be curious without having to be brave. He could watch the world from somewhere he knew he was safe.

And Mom?
She was completely unfazed. 😂
She knew they were safe, her baby was tucked in close, and she just casually carried on doing her thing.

I loved this moment when I took the photograph. And looking at it again while working on the Journey Wheel, I realized it showed me something about Love that I hadn't really put into words before.

Love isn't always grand gestures.
Sometimes love is simply the place where we don't have to brace ourselves against the world.
Where we can be uncertain. Where we can peek out when we're ready. Where we don't have to perform or pretend we're okay.

Where we belong.

And you definitely don’t need to have your life figured out. 😂

JOY — Savour

When I started thinking about what Joy looked like, I remembered this photograph.

I took it at Sunset Beach on a day I loved. There was nothing particularly profound happening.
People were gathered at the water, the sun was setting, and for a little while, life just felt...good.
And maybe that's part of what Joy is.
Not always the big celebration or the thing we've been waiting for. Sometimes it's the moment when we realize there is nowhere else we'd rather be.

We spend so much time moving toward the next thing. Fixing something. Planning something. Waiting for something to change.
Joy asks us to notice when nothing needs to.

Wonderment • Savour • Enoughness
Life is good.

Please welcome the newest member of The Alchemical Muse team.

Head of Waterfront Security
aka The River Warden

After weeks of people telling me this boy “needs a job,” it appears he has selected his own.
His duties currently include monitoring all activity along the river, supervising the parking lot, conducting surveillance, and alerting management to suspicious persons, dogs, leaves, boats, birds and occasionally absolutely nothing.

He takes his position very seriously.
Management is currently working with him on the concept that observe and report does not mean intervene and apprehend. 😂

Compensation includes room and board, treats, river walks and unlimited access to his mother’s patience.

Performance to date: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
