Friday Founders Journal #17: The Evolution of Soy Wax Melts
When I first started this business, soy wax melts weren't even on my radar. Looking back, I honestly have no idea why it took me a few years to finally introduce them into my lineup! But once I did, the journey to finding the right way to make and package them was a long road of trial, error, and a whole lot of learning.
If you’ve been along for the ride for a while, you might remember a few different versions of our melts over the years!
The Clamshell Era & The Plastic Realization
When I first dipped my toes into wax melts, I did what most candle makers do: I used standard plastic clamshell molds. They were convenient and easy to pour, but it wasn't long before I hit a major roadblock. I looked at all that plastic sitting on my shelves and realized it completely contradicted what I wanted for both my home and my business. I wanted to eliminate unnecessary plastics, so the clamshells had to go.
Wax Bark & Chocolate Bars
Next came the Wax Bark phase, which was super fun, followed by pouring our melts into chocolate-bar-style snap blocks. Visually, the chocolate bar melts were an absolute hit—they looked fantastic!
..Until they hit retail shelves, that is.
It turned out that soy wax in that specific shape was just a little too delicate for transportation and display handling. They were breaking far too easily in store displays, and having a customer find a broken package of wax on the shelf just didn't meet the standard I set for my products. Back to the drawing board!
Taking a Pause & The Eco-Friendly Comeback
Disheartened by the breakage, I decided to take a break from wax melts altogether for a bit to figure out a better way. I loved the look of the chocolate bars too much to give up on them completely, so I went searching for a solution.
Fast forward to recently: I’m so excited to share that soy wax melts are officially back!
This time around, we found a much thicker, far more durable chocolate bar mold that can actually withstand being shipped and handled in stores—no more snapping! Plus, they are packaged in an eco-friendly, plastic-free design that protects the product, looks great, and aligns completely with our eco-conscious values.
To test the waters, I launched this newest version with just 4 summer scents to see how you all loved them before the autumn rush. The response so far has been wonderful, which means... new fall scents are officially in the works!
Truthfully, it was your messages asking where they went that brought these melts back to life faster than I had intended! Finding this thicker mold just means we get to keep the fun bar shape you loved, but with an upgraded design that holds up everywhere they go. Thanks for always sharing your feedback and reading along with these Friday peeks behind the scenes! What scents are you hoping to see make the fall lineup? 🍂
