Thousands of books pass through our doors every year.

These are the 26 that never left Chandler’s mind.

As the owner of Cedar Canoe Books, he’s spent years reading across genres, recommending books to customers, and helping build a bookstore around stories he loves. If someone asked him for the books that have stayed with him the longest, challenged him the most, or that he’d recommend again and again, this would be the list.

We all choose books based on our mood, whether we admit it or not.

Sometimes you want a book that will make you giggle and kick your feet.

Sometimes you want a book that will emotionally destroy you.

Sometimes you want a book so good that everyone around you gets tired of hearing about it.

Bonus points if you drop a book we’d add to one of these lists 👇

This isn’t a book about the end of the world. It’s a book about who you’d spend the end of the world with.

For Pride Month, I wanted to highlight one of the most moving books I’ve read this year: We Burned So Bright.

The story follows an elderly gay couple as Earth drifts toward a black hole, but what makes this book so special isn’t the apocalypse, but the relationship at its centre. Watching two people reflect on a lifetime of love, loss, and shared memories was both heartbreaking and beautiful.

What stayed with me most was the reminder that even in the face of unimaginable change, our connections to each other are what matter most.

If you’re looking for a Pride Month read that will make you laugh, cry, and hold your favourite people a little closer, I can’t recommend this one enough.
