We haven’t been buying more chairs. They’ve been multiplying all by themselves.
This post deserves a little explanation. In the 1700s, Lazzaro Spallanzani challenged the idea that life could appear spontaneously, using boiled broth in sealed flasks. He also pioneered artificial insemination. Neither discovery explains our chairs.
No new chairs, then—but we do have a vintage Spallanzani portrait. A thoughtful gift for a doctor or scientist… or a cheeky wedding present for a couple who appreciate a little reproductive science with their romance.

This chair is a little bit dramatic. Actually, a lot.
Dating probably circa 1905/1910, it has this huge pierced back, carved decoration and those wonderful flowing lines that are starting to flirt with Art Nouveau.
It looks to be small-workshop or craftsman made not just an ordinary factory chair. There is a lot of work in it, especially in that back.
But...
The upholstery is clean and intact, springs are all there, which is good, but at the moment it is not what I would call comfortable. It needs either a nice proper cushion or, if you want to do it properly, a re-upholstery.
And because we are at the end of the season, we have taken that into account putting a price.
It is big, slightly excessive and absolutely not shy.
Basically, if you want a chair that behaves itself, this is probably not the one.
But you should come to see it ....

One of those pieces that makes you wonder how on earth it survived.

This extraordinary Perfect Pantry dates to around 1900–1910 and was basically an all-in-one food storage and kitchen-organizing system from the days before fitted kitchens and Hoosier cabinets.
They are often associated with camp kitchens, frontier cooking and chuckwagons, where flour, sugar, spices and other dry goods needed to be kept organized, protected and ready to use while travelling or working on the range.
Wonderfully eccentric, a remarkable survivor from the turn of the century that now deserves the central stage in your living room.
