A little preview of what's waiting for you next weekend 👀

We're officially 1 week out from the Grand Opening Weekend for Creek2Coast Paddlesports and Moss and Mountain Outdoor Co.

We've spent a lot of time over the past few weeks getting this space ready, filling the shelves, racking boats, unpacking gear, and generally trying to make this place feel like somewhere Campbell River's outdoor community will want to hang out. Next weekend, we finally get to properly celebrate it with you.

We've got a full weekend planned with workshops, guest speakers, giveaways, food, plenty of gear to check out, and lots more.

Whether you're a paddler, trail runner, hiker, camper, outdoor nerd, or just curious about what we've been building down here, come say hi.

Another great Basic Kayak Skills course in the books!

We had an awesome group out on the water this weekend working through the fundamentals - risk management, efficient strokes, boat control, and of course, plenty of wet exits and rescues (both intentionally and unintentionally 🤣). All the little things that add up to feeling more comfortable and confident in a kayak.

There may have been a little trepidation around going upside down at first, but by the end of the day everyone was running through assisted rescues independently, with a few even having a crack at rolling!

With plenty of paddling season still ahead of us, there's still time to build those skills before fall. Our next Basic Kayak Skills course runs September 13 in Campbell River, with everything you need to get on the water included. 4 spots left.

Already have the basics covered? We've also got more opportunities for Level 1 training, rolling clinics, and private courses in the works for this fall. More on those soon 👀.

After months of planning, renovations, unpacking inventory, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes, we're excited to finally share that Creek2Coast Paddlesports is officially open!

What started as a small coaching business has grown into a retail shop built for paddlers on Vancouver Island - a place where you can see and compare premium gear in person, ask questions, share trip stories, and get advice from people who spend as much time using the equipment as talking about it.

Our goal has always been simple: to create the kind of paddlesports shop we would want to visit - a place built on experience, quality equipment, and a genuine passion for getting people out on the water.

This is a soft opening, so we're keeping things simple while we settle into our new home. A larger community celebration is in the works for this fall, but for now, the doors are open and you're invited to stop by, have a look around, and say hello.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Creek2Coast along the way. We couldn't have done it without you, and we're so excited to see where this next chapter takes us.

A few weeks from now, we'll be placing our next paddle order from in Belgium.

For the past few months, Creek2Coast Paddlesports has been growing beyond courses and trip planning.

Now, there’s a new space taking shape - a place for paddlers to find great gear, talk boats, build skills, plan adventures, and spend more time immersed in the sport we all love.

There’s still plenty to do before we open the doors, but the pieces are starting to come together.

Running a kayaking business isn't all whales breaching and sunset views.

After every single trip, course, rental, and demo, each boat gets rinsed and vacuumed. Every paddle gets washed. Every PFD and sprayskirt gets cleaned and hung to dry.

It's not glamorous, but ensuring every customer that sits in one of our boats has clean, dry, functioning gear is of the utmost importance to us. While it's time consuming hard work, these post-trip wash days have become a bit of a ritual for us.

There are some places on Vancouver Island that still feel genuinely wild. Kyuquot Sound is one of them.

Long beaches covered in shells, rocky islets draped in kelp, snow-capped peaks on the horizon, sea lions, seabirds, and mile after mile of coastline where the only sounds are your paddle entering the water and the swell exploding off the rocks.

It's the kind of place that reminds you why sea kayaking exists in the first place.

These images, captured by our friends and former co-guides, Marty and Kelly, during a recent trip to the west coast, also happen to feature one of the most iconic expedition kayaks ever built: the Valley Nordkapp.

Originally designed in the 1970s for an expedition around Norway's North Cape, the Nordkapp has become one of the boats that helped define modern sea kayaking. Decades later, it still feels completely at home in places like Kyuquot Sound - covering miles efficiently, handling changing conditions with grace, and encouraging you to keep paddling just a little farther around the next headland.

Some kayaks are designed to get you on the water. Others are designed to take you deep into places like this.

Weather forecasts don't tell the whole story.

One of the biggest misconceptions new paddlers have is that the weather forecast is exactly what they'll experience on the water, when in reality, it's much more complicated than that.

Marine forecasts are written primarily for mariners - not kayakers. They're often describing conditions over huge stretches of water, and those conditions can vary dramatically from one corner of the forecast region to another. A sheltered bay, a narrow channel, and an exposed headland can all experience completely different weather at the same time.

It's also important to remember that a forecast is exactly that - a forecast. It's an educated prediction based on weather models, observations, and experience. Different weather models frequently disagree with one another, and meteorologists are making the best call they can with the information they have.

That's why we never rely on just one source. Before heading out, we'll usually compare:

• Environment Canada Marine Forecast
• Windy
• SpotWX

If they're all telling a similar story, our confidence goes up. If they're saying different things, it's a sign to dig a little deeper.

The biggest takeaway? Don't treat a forecast like a guarantee. Treat it as one piece of the puzzle, then combine it with local knowledge, your own observations, and good judgment.

Learning to interpret weather forecasts - not just read them - is one of the most valuable skills a paddler can develop.
