🥜🐦🐿️Who wins the stuffing-your-face competition: Blue Jay or Chipmunk? 😂

It's Thanksgiving weekend, and while many of us may be getting ready to stuff our faces, the Blue Jays and chipmunks have been way ahead of us! 😂

Both are busy collecting and caching food for later, and both have some pretty impressive built-in storage.

🐿️ Chipmunks can stuff their fur-lined, expandable cheek pouches with an impressive amount of food.

🐦 Blue Jays can carry food in their bill and an expandable throat pouch, helping them haul away acorns, tree nuts and peanuts to stash for later.

And all that Blue Jay caching does more than stock the pantry! Jays don't retrieve every acorn they hide, meaning some of those forgotten caches can sprout into oak trees. 🌳

A huge thank you to Mélanie Ouellette from the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library for such a wonderful presentation! Mélanie is a wealth of knowledge, with a fantastic way of making information easy to understand, memorable and fun to learn!

We learned when and how to collect different seeds and that many native plant seeds need exposure to winter conditions to germinate in spring. ❄️🌱 Using recycled materials, we even made our own little mini greenhouses to keep seeds protected while they experience the winter elements!

Fall is a wonderful time to get outside and collect native plant seeds! We hope this presentation inspires you to add something new to your garden and to check out the Ottawa Flower Seed Library!

Many backyard birds are clever food hiders, or “cachers,” storing seeds, nuts and even insects in tree crevices, under bark or in the ground to eat later! 🌳🥜 These smart birds use landmarks, the sun and even each other to keep track of their stashes, helping them survive tough winters and busy seasons. ❄️☀️ Watching them work is like seeing a tiny treasure hunt happen in your backyard! 🔍✨

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Day of Autumn is Tuesday, September 22. That's when the length of day and night are almost the same. Be sure your feeders are ready for some hungry birds that are either preparing or recharging for the longer nights.
