What does it mean to be Mentally Shredded? ⁣

It’s not something you do, but a way you live.⁣

A commitment to being your best self in all areas, not just in the gym. ⁣

Everyone loves the flash and the excitement of fitness, and we often get obsessed with the way our body looks and performs. ⁣

At the end of the day, all of that means very little in the game of health and happiness without also doing the work between the ears.⁣

Been a minute. Sorry, was moving across the country. Back at this now. What’s up?

On a that note actually, I wanted to speak a bit about comfort zones. And how not a lot of good stuff happens in them.

Yeah yeah yeah, it’s warm and cozy and you have nice things in there like herbal tea and that chocolate cake and caramel sauce your mom makes. Or whatever your comfort food is. Not much beats that chocolate cake. But that’s beside the point.

I’ve been chatting with lots of friends lately about making big moves. Whether it be in their career, their living location, or their relationships. Of course it’s fu***ng terrifying to pack yourself up and hit the road, literally or metaphorically. Trust me, because I know. But what’s worse — the growing pains from a new endeavour, or the weird stagnant pains from staying exactly how things are?

All I’m saying is that if you were content, you wouldn’t be considering another option — in career, in living location, in people. Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone. It might be ugly at first, but I promise you the growth from full sending it is always net positive. Regardless of outcome.

And if you’re walking around wearing a Mentally Shredded shirt but you’re stunting your own growth…..what are you even doing?

So go do the thing. I’m so happy I did.

I miss you guys, but I’m PUMPED and PROUD to have put my personal growth first. No ragrets.

Cheers,

Jess

It’s easy to step back and look at the big picture of all the things that went wrong and let yourself fall into the victim role. I am sure many of us can build up quite an impressive resume of what has happened or is happening to us now and become instantly overwhelmed and feel defeated. I know I certainly can!

BUT how you tackle what life throws at you is entirely in your control. It’s easy to say stay positive and you will attract positivity, but when you feel like you are drowning - it’s not so easy to be a beaming ray of sunshine.

Perhaps the first step is just that - literally get out of bed and take one step. Sometimes not all of our problems can be addressed at one time - and that’s ok!! Sometimes we just need to focus on breaking down one issue, put all of our energy into creating steps to move past it and then tackle the next problem. Next thing you know the defeating items on your to-do list are crossed off and you are motoring on forward. Sometimes those things might take an hour, and sometimes they might take 10 years.

Just a few days ago my mom said to me “why don’t you worry about problem X right now, and then in a few months tackle problem Y, you don’t have to take on the whole world at once” and that one hit home with me. I guess sometimes parents can still offer a little wisdom here and there (but don’t tell her I said that 😝).

Focus on one step at a time and one day you just might wake up with the sun beaming out of you. Advice from my mom to me and now to you.

Happy Sunday guys 😌

I want to take a moment to talk about adaptability: and my lack of having that lol.

So I’ve been let down. A lot. But honestly, that’s character development, baby. I like to joke about having *just* enough trauma to make me funny. But it actually resulted in me becoming a bit of a control freak.

“When you have total control of every situation, you can control the outcome”, or that was my mindset at least. But that doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for reality. You’ll still fail. People are still going to disappoint you. Life is still going to hand you healthy servings of humble pie, no matter how much of a gorilla grip you have on the steering wheel. That’s just the way she goes.

Someone said “happiness = expectations – reality”. And I think that’s pretty damn accurate. Leaving room for things to go wrong alleviates that pressure you put on yourself and situations. Showing up and doing your best is on you, but understanding that there will always be that wild card factor at play that you simply can’t control, will allow you to be less bothered when things go wrong.

So I’m not saying to put the car in cruise, toss a brick on the gas pedal and take a nap. But being adaptable and rolling with the punches is key in this weird life. Understand that fighting for that control/particular outcome without leaving space for reality will only disappoint you. I’ve practiced being less of a control freak (therefore, more adaptable) by taking a step back and giving other people/the universe the power. Stop trying to force connections; if people want to they will. Stop trying to move so quick professionally; if it’s meant to happen it will. And so on. But still doing MY best in all these scenarios.

Long winded, but ultimately from here on out, we’re only aligning. Being adaptable is taking the L, moving on and quitting when things don’t align. That’s winner s**t. So maybe try more of that.

Now go crush this week!

Are you trying to be 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳, or 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When you’re chasing growth, are you doing it out of comparison or curiosity?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We all want to grow and be better in the areas of our lives we care about. Whether it’s in the gym, our sport, relationships, whatever it is; the way we chase that growth is what matters most.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Especially in the IG world, it’s so easy to get caught in the trap of looking at what everyone else is doing, and then only feeling validated when you get XX time on a workout, or lift YY amount of weight. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
You’re always trying to be better, and yet no matter how good you get you can always find someone on a higher level, which gives you plenty of reason to feel like crap about what you did.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“Hey I just hit a new PR!! Oh, that person who’s 10 years younger just lifted 50lbs more than me for their warm up set, I guess I kinda suck then…..”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When driven by comparison, no matter what you do, it’ll never be enough.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But instead can you chase that growth and progress simply out of curiosity to find what you’re capable of? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Showing up day in and day out to put in the work, simply to see what’s possible and find what your potential truly is. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Using other people as inspiration to think “if they can do it, why can’t I”?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
There’s more than enough success and glory to go around, if we spend our time cheering each other on instead of knocking ourselves down, we can all win.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When you show up with an almost child-like curiosity to see what you’re capable of, that’s when you’ll actually find it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And the reward for that? A ton of progress and a life of fulfillment. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The real prize is never any accomplishment or hitting a specific goal, but the pure joy of knowing that each day you put in your best to move towards where you want to go. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Chase growth, be curious, stay Mentally Shredded⁣⁣

If you sat down and wrote out a list of your priorities how far would you make it down the list before you wrote down yourself?

Our society has become so focused on pleasing other people that sometimes we forget to take a minute and check in with ourselves. We agree to more tasks at work, more favours to friends, more social activities and don’t realize until maybe it’s a bit too late that somewhere along the line we lost sight of what we’re actually supposed to be chasing right now.

Our schedules feel overloaded and we can move through the days in a zombie like motion from one task to the next trying to check off all the boxes of the things we have committed to. I most certainly am super guilty of this – I am also guilty of justifying this behaviour… “it’s a pandemic, I need to focus on reliable income” and “this person is doing this much, so I should be capable of more” are both sentences I have said in the last year far too often – until something clicked…I’m tired. I’m covid burnt out (aren’t we all?). AND I stopped pursuing what I wanted because I got too busy filling my days.

I’ve started simply saying no to things thrown at me and I’ve made sure my schedule incorporates time for me to be alone doing whatever I want - whether it be hiking, running errands, studying, eating (yep – I got so busy I didn’t make time to eat properly for a few days), or simply laying on my couch with my doggos doing absolutely nothing.

Remember who you are living your life for and make sure that that person falls at the top of your priority list. Today, and everyday.

-Ali

P.S. This is one of my doggos. They don’t believe in posing for a picture on a hike together at the same time so we take turns.
Maybe they’re too focussed on putting themselves first 🤷🏻‍♀️

Team!!! Gear will be landing this week, we’ll have yours out to you asap. We can’t thank you enough for all the initial support we’ve received. Like...damn. Blown away.

That being said, now we can finally get to the nitty gritty. The vulnerability. The introspection. The work. We want to use this platform as a place to share tactics, stories and ways you can practice mindset. So here goes nothing.

I want to start by talking about priorities. Having simple and authentic priorities in life IS easy. So why do we fight it?

I had a really good conversation with the kids in this photo last night. We talked about how to rearrange my “priority blocks”.

Picture everything in your life is a block, labeled “work”, “relationships”, “fitness”, “finances”, etc. Prioritizing one, back burners another. I realized literally last night that my blocks are all out of whack. And have been for years.

When you live simply and authentically, priority blocks emerge in the order they should be arranged in. It’s really that easy. Letting go of the extra garbage that doesn’t add to your life, helps highlight the stuff that actually matters. I’ve definitely allowed myself to be consumed by the extra garbage.

Letting go of the extra garbage is tough though! It’s almost scary to focus fully on a few things instead of spreading yourself thin. FOMO maybe? Had another cool conversation last night, with my dad of all people, who said “you’ve recognized that you’re in too deep, so now it’s up to you to get out of the water before your drown”.

Articulating what matters to YOU and running full speed at that stuff is how to live simply and authentically. Full assing a few things is infinitely better (and more sustainable) than half assing a bunch of things. That’s the take away here.

Priorities are key. Time is money. It’s your own personal currency that you can’t get back, so spend it wisely. Rearrange your blocks, and let the garbage take itself out.

Cheers,

Jess

What is Mentally Shredded to me? Alright.

Life is full of unexpected curve balls. What IS in your control though, is how you respond and grow after those curve balls deck you square in the teeth.

You can either maintain poor coping mechanisms and allow it to define/debilitate you, or you can use it as an opportunity rework your mindset to focus on the big picture.

Episode #110 of the Chasing Excellence podcast by Ben Bergeron, is all about mental toughness. You’ll have to go listen. But he gives 6 steps to becoming mentally tough:
1. become a learner
2. expect adversity
3. set your sights
4. learn your triggers
5. kill the critic
6. seek out practice

He elaborates on all of these, but the ah-ha mindset/mentally shredded moment for me was reframing my engagement with my triggers. Instead of allowing myself to be consumed by them, I started using them to practice healthy coping and communication, while viewing it as an opportunity focus on things that actually matter. and letting go of things that don’t.

“practice ≠ perfect
practice = permanent”

It’s about consistently using s**t situations as opportunities to practice mental toughness instead of letting them beat you. and also being very selective with who you share your energy with. the quality of your circle is definitely big picture stuff.

being dedicated to this process, no matter how uncomfy, is what being is to me. decking those curve balls square in the teeth right back.

cheers,

Jess
