7pm this Thursday here at Novel Idea in Downtown Kingston, Merve will unveil his latest book ‘Mohr’s Memories: Random Images of Life.’ Make sure you drop by to chat with the man himself AND purchase a copy!

About his latest the author has this to say: “The idea for this book comes from [Orhan] Pamuk's 2024 ‘Memories of Distant Mountains,’ which is essentially a diary notebook superimposed on coloured sketches he made of his surroundings on any given day over a ten-year period. Mine is something a bit different.
I've used photographs instead with notes attached about the circumstances. Sort of the same thing...

“In my case, these photos were
taken over a seven-year period from 2020 onwards and reflect my somewhat compulsive photographic history....

“[This photo diary] includes several notable trips abroad but otherwise reflects 'the normal course of events.’ Each image triggers some kind of reflection or memory, on occasion a poem or essay of sorts. Taken together they reflect a certain way of seeing the world which may be of interest to the reader. Finally, the attribution of these images and memories to my alter ego, Owen Mohr, is intended to bring my creative ramblings full circle to years previous and my Mohr Trilogy, itself an exercise in evoking a time gone by, and its larger meaning.”

Board book royalty!

With his latest, California’s Canadian-born board book king reasserts his reign! August 1st is Emancipation Day, which marks the day in 1834 when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, ending chattel slavery for millions of people of African descent. Not a bad day to pick up a copy of Wayne Grady’s book, Emancipation Day, which was long listed for the Giller Prize and won the Amazon.ca First Novel Award in 2013.
Wayne Grady will be at KWF2026 with Jess Gibson and Chanel Sutherland, discussing short fiction and his brand new book (not yet released!) called The Cartel and Other Cover Stories. Check out the Short Story Showcase on our website: kingstonwritersfest.ca

ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL READING.

Published three years ago, John Vaillant’s much-lauded account of the Fort McMurray wildfire—which ravaged that town ten years ago—is unfortunately all the more urgently relevant today. TIME called ‘Fire Weather’“[a] gripping depiction of the blaze’s devastating trajectory. . . . TONIGHT AT NOVEL IDEA, don’t miss this literary double header!

7pm Thursday July 23rd, we’re hosting the Kingston launch of ‘Baby in a Box,’ the debut short story collection by Maine-based novelist Sarah Braunstein. Also this evening, local surrealist Jason Heroux will read from his upcoming sixth poetry collection ‘Unfinished Wilderness.’
