It’s been a while!

But I’ve donned my Unfettered socks to work up the courage to tell you a little about what’s been going on, why the absence, and why my communication has been spotty at best.

Here’s a quick synopsis:

-I am needing to focus on my fibre art practice in a big way because there are a number of really exciting opportunities that have come along, and I’ve felt compelled to pursue them. I’ve always struggled to be in two places at the same time, especially with arting and businessing requiring undeniably different energies. It’s never not a feeling of torn, and that’s taken its toll

-The impact of shutting down shipping to the US has been quite sizeable for our business to absorb, and we’ve had to make very big life changes as a result. We want to keep our prices the same for our Canadian customers, and that has meant that we need to reduce our operating costs

-Loren and I are taking a moment to catch our breath, touch grass, and enjoy the little things as we head into our next chapter. With Unfettered in tow, we are moving from coast to coast: about 6000 kms away, to a quiet little town in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. I’ve been a whole country away from my family for 20 yrs now, and Loren has been craving a different pace of life that can finally involve emus.

We’re going to shuffle everything across the country as quickly as possible, but it’s undeniable that there will be an interruption in our service (in the last three weeks of June). I’ll be shipping the last of our orders before the move all next week, and so if there’s something you’ll need between now and the end of June—now’s a very good time to make an order for either metal or fibre.

I want to say a very big thank you to you for being so patient with us as we’ve been navigating all of these massive choices behind the scenes. Oh, and Loren wants me to warn you that he’s plotting some IG take-overs once we land in the Maritimes. Truly, we cannot know what those will look like🫣

Finally, I leave you with a prediction: the Unfettered socks will return to boxes before the close of 2026 ;) They’re the bridge, you see, between disparate moments of creativity coast to coast

There is an art event taking place in Tumbler Ridge, BC Sunday (April 26th).

Those of you in Canada will likely know that the community of Tumbler Ridge is grieving in the wake of a school shooting, so this event has been planned and organized for the sake of collective healing.

Free macrame workshops are being taught by , and there will be a whole host of other creative activities for adults and children alike.

I wanted to share this poster to help get the word out to anyone in BC close enough to attend. But also to acknowledge the very real ways that art and craft can heal.

For more info on the event, has shared a brilliant write-up and an fb event link in her feed.

There’s a CBC article today that I want to link you to (but can’t here on IG), so I’ve posted a link on our website’s Newsbulletin. It’s a quick read, and well worth it.

Quick context: a few days ago, Ontario’s premier admonished students for taking basket weaving courses when he claimed they should instead be focused on an education that will land them jobs. He remarked that basket weaving has no educative value…simply because, in his view, there’s no market for baskets.

I was delighted to come across an interview with Spencer Lunham Jr. () in direct response to these remarks. Lunham, an Indigenous fibre artist with a prolific career in basket weaving, shares images of his intricate basket sculptures. He talks of the value (fiscal, cultural, educational, and historical) of basket weaving.

Hope you’ll take a few minutes to read Lunham Jr’s words and to check out his work

Capturing this romantic pairing of a Monochrome Box headed out today with our Frame of the Month in flat black.

One of the reasons that fascism attacks art/craft is that it’s a means of self-fulfillment, pleasure, enjoyment. I want for us to keep holding onto those things so tightly.

Marketing anything right now is challenging because commerce isn’t the way out.
Creativity is, though!
What I see in this box is agency. Someone is going to quiet the noise by spending time making something special. And that’s an outcome that’s worth holding near and dear.

“Cuddle Puddle” is one of our newly released Scrappy Handspun Merino Art Yarns by

This one is made from offcuts from an out-of-date and unused set of sample cards (because all salvage is useful and we don’t want anything to go to waste).

Cuddle Puddle—it’s a dreamy one!

I always get a kick out of packaging our handmade macrame rope holders. They’re wackily wonderful in their offering of a solution to a problem almost nobody knew existed.
