There's been a lot of talk lately that raw spruce sap is worth **$500 per pound.**

As someone who harvested and sold spruce sap long before I ever made chewing gum, I just don't believe that's true.

I know what a pound of sap looks like. I know what the raw market looks like. And I know the difference between a lump of forest resin and a finished piece of hand-clarified spruce gum.

Those are two very different things.

Real spruce gum is hard work. It means scouting, harvesting, cleaning, filtering, cooking, failed batches, long drives, sticky hands, and years of learning the trees.

But I still don't think spruce gum should become a luxury item that only a few people can afford.

At Alberta Wildcraft, I'd rather play the fair game.

I price my gum based on the work involved and what I feel is fair for the people who support this craft. I want someone to experience real Canadian wildcrafted spruce gum without feeling like they're buying something wrapped in hype.

The forest gives us something remarkable.

I don't think honesty should be rare too.

If you'd like to read more about my perspective, I wrote a blog about it:

Is raw spruce resin really worth $500 a pound? Alberta Wildcraft calls out the luxury marketing gimmicks and shares the honest math behind traditional gum.

I've spent years harvesting in the wild.

Prairies. Aspen stands. Pine forests. Spruce country. Old logging roads. Campsites. Bushwhacking through untouched forest. Sitting on the ground for hours while picking sap and herbs.

Not once have I found a tick on myself.
Not once on my dogs.
Not once on my family.

Yet lately my feeds are absolutely flooded with tick videos, tick warnings, and what feels like an explosion of tick fear.

Maybe tick populations really are changing in some places. Maybe social media is amplifying the issue. Maybe it's a bit of both.

All I know is that my real-world experience after countless hours in the bush doesn't match what I'm seeing online, and it makes me wonder if we're watching another kind of scamdemic where fear spreads faster than facts.

I'm genuinely curious.

If you're a hunter, trapper, farmer, forager, logger, hiker, or someone who spends serious time outdoors, what's YOUR experience?

Do you find ticks all the time, once in a while, or have you never seen one either?

Let's compare boots-on-the-ground experience instead of headlines.

Maria's Crazy Adventure update...

What started as a simple sap harvesting trip has gone completely sideways.

We loaded the truck, got babysitters, and headed out for sap.

Instead we found:

- Lots of Labrador tea.
- Spruce tips.
- Birch bark.
- A whole lot of aspen.

Then we discovered we forgot our coats.

Then we discovered we forgot our pillows.

So tonight I'm using a backpack full of birch bark as mine, and Ron is using a bag of Labrador tea.

To make things even better, he also gets to sleep with my size 12 feet in his face.

On the bright side... we finally made it to the mountains and there's sap all around us.

Tomorrow's plan:
6 a.m. gas station coffee and see where the forest takes us.

🌹 NEW RELEASE 🌲

It's finally here.
After a lot of experimenting and taste testing, I'm excited to introduce our newest handcrafted blend:

Boreal Rose Tea
Made with: 🌲 Pine needles 🌲 Spruce needles 🌲 Cedar 🌹 Rose petals

The result is a smooth, forest-fresh tea with a gentle floral finish. It reminds me of walking through the boreal woods in early summer when everything is alive and blooming.
Every bag is blended and packaged by our family right here in Alberta using the same wildcrafting spirit that built Alberta Wildcraft from the ground up.
If you've been looking for something a little different, I think you're going to love this one.

I'll put the link in the comments.

As always, thank you for supporting local and helping us keep traditional wildcrafting alive. ❀️

🌿 Welcome to Urban Herb Hunt! 🌿
Most people think they need to head deep into the wilderness to find useful plants.
The truth is, our cities are packed with edible and medicinal plants hiding in plain sight. Parks, back alleys, fence lines, vacant lots, sidewalks, and green spaces are often full of wild herbs that people walk past every day.

In fact, Alberta Wildcraft started this way. Long before there was a business, I was exploring Edmonton's parks and back alleys, learning about the incredible plants growing all around us.

So let's have some fun!

πŸ“Έ Your Mission: Find the plant in today's post growing somewhere in your community and share a photo in the comments.

🌿 1 point for correctly identifying the plant. πŸ“· 1 point for sharing your own photo. πŸƒ Bonus point if you know how it's been traditionally used.

Keep in mind that many of the photos I'll be sharing were taken in late summer, so the plants you find today may look quite different depending on the season, growth stage, or whether they're flowering, seeding, or just emerging for the year.

The goal isn't to harvest everything you findβ€”it's to get outside, look around and see qhats available to you !
To learn what's growing around you and start seeing your city through a different lens.

Ready?

I don't usually use fancy harvesting equipment. Most days it's just me, a basket, and my hands. 🌼

But as Alberta Wildcraft grows, I have to start using my hands a little more wisely.

This little berry picker has been an absolute game changer for harvesting dandelion flower heads. What used to take forever now goes much faster, which means more time for processing, packaging, homeschooling, and everything else that comes with running a family business.

If you're wondering why I'm using a berry picker on dandelions in this video... now you know! πŸ˜„

And if anyone wants the Amazon link for the picker, let me know in the comments. I got two in a pack.

Not affiliated, not sponsored, and definitely not a paid promotionβ€”just sharing a tool that's made my life a whole lot easier.
