WELL. THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY.

I got stung by a wasp today.

I was casually sitting at home doing some bookwork, minding my own business, when I reached over to grab my pen and—

LIGHTNING. PAIN. WOWZERS.

My pen went FLYING, and I may or may not have let out a string of choice words.

My goodness!! It has been YEARS since I’ve been stung by a bee or wasp, and apparently I had completely forgotten just how AWFUL it is!

Seriously. Why does something so tiny need to hurt THAT MUCH?!

So now I need to know...

When was the last time YOU got stung?

Okay, apparently this is the week where the Oranje Grove page talks about everything EXCEPT Oranje Grove.

But I had something last night that was so good, I feel like we need to talk about it.

While I was out on my little Kitchener/Waterloo adventure, I stopped at Poppy’s bagel and bakery in Conestoga Mall.

Now, I like a good bagel.

But THIS was a good bagel.

Fresh, chewy, loaded up properly and just SO darn good.

And it got me thinking — as a small business owner, I know how much it means when someone tells another person about your business simply because they genuinely enjoyed what you made.

So… this is me doing exactly that.

No collaboration. No free bagel. No one asked me to post this. 😂 I just had a really great bagel and thought they deserved a shout-out.

So if you happen to be wandering around Conestoga Mall with a bagel craving, I can officially say I get the hype. 😂👏

And now for the important question…

What is the superior bagel flavour?

Because I feel like people have VERY strong opinions about this.

Okay, yesterday we talked about driving in Kitchener…

Today I have a driving question for all of my Dutchies.

WHAT is it actually like to drive in the Netherlands?!

Believe it or not, I have NEVER been to the Netherlands. It is absolutely somewhere I would love to visit — but when I eventually get there, there is one thing I’m not entirely sure I’m brave enough to do…
DRIVE.

Now, I LOVE driving. I’m a confident driver, city traffic doesn’t bother me, and I’m generally pretty comfortable figuring out where I’m going.

But driving in the Netherlands?

The bikes alone make me nervous.

There are bikes beside you. Bikes behind you. Bikes coming toward you. Bike lanes. Bike crossings. Roundabouts WITH bikes…

And in my head, there are probably 47 rules about who has the right of way that every Dutch person learned at age six and I would be desperately trying to figure out while someone rings a bicycle bell at me.

So I need to hear from the people who have actually done it.

Is driving in the Netherlands actually intimidating for a Canadian?

And for those of you who grew up in the Netherlands and now live here — I REALLY want to hear from you:

Which is easier to drive in: Canada or the Netherlands?

Because part of me thinks I could totally handle it…

…and the other part of me thinks I should just get on the train. 😂

Let’s talk about driving for a minute! 🚗

Absolutely NOTHING to do with Oranje Grove… but after my drive tonight, I have questions. 😂

Tonight I had to head to the other side of Kitchener to pick up supplies. It was around 5 o’clock, so as you can imagine — lots of traffic, lots of construction, and plenty of opportunities to practice a little patience.

Here’s my question…

If someone lets you into traffic, DO YOU STILL WAVE?! 👋

Because tonight, I let at least 10 cars in throughout my travels.

Want to know how many waves I got?

ONE.

ONE WAVE! 😂

Now, I absolutely love driving. I live in the country, but I’m in the city pretty regularly and city driving doesn’t bother me at all. But I happened to notice it tonight, and then I couldn’t STOP noticing it.

No waves!

And maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but I wave at EVERYONE. 😂

You let me into traffic? Wave. 👋
You stop so I can cross the street? Wave. 👋
You hold the door open for me? Thank you!
You move over on a country road so we can both get by? You’re probably getting the full hand-off-the-steering-wheel wave. 😂

Apparently I have very strong feelings about waving. Who knew?! 😂

But maybe I’m officially showing my age here.

So now I NEED TO KNOW…

Let’s talk Droppies… or Dropjes!

Where do you keep yours?

In the car?
In your purse?
In the tractor?
Beside your favourite chair for TV time?
Do you sneak one in church?
Eat them while driving?
Or are you one of those very disciplined people who actually saves them for a special occasion or when company comes over?!

Me? I have Droppies on me almost ALL the time. And there is DEFINITELY a stash in the car.

Because you just never know when you’re going to need a little Drop.

So now I need to know… where is your Drop stash?

This morning I woke up craving a very traditional Dutch treat — hagelslag on a rusk.

I’m 42 years old and, to be perfectly honest, this NEVER gets old.

For years, I told myself we kept hagelslag and rusks in the house for the kiddos… but looking back, I’m pretty sure a very large part of the reason was for the hubby and I!

There’s just something about a crunchy rusk, a little butter and a generous sprinkle of hagelslag that instantly takes you back. Simple, nostalgic and SO good.

So now I’m curious about all of our adult Dutchies out there…

Do you still eat hagelslag?

Are you team rusk, team fresh bread, or do you claim you only keep it in the house “for the kids and grandkids”? 😂

No judgment here. I’m firmly in the hagelslag has no age limit camp.

YOU MADE IT THROUGH THE FIRST WEEK!

A big congratulations to all the students, teachers, parents, bus drivers, EAs, school staff — and everyone else who survived the first week of school!

The lunches were packed, the alarms were set (and probably snoozed), the backpacks made it out the door, and somehow everyone made it to Friday. We think that deserves a little celebration.

So whether you need a stroopwafel, a piggie, a bag of Dutch candy… or all three — come treat yourself at Oranje Grove Dutch Shoppe!

Because after the first week back to school, we think everyone deserves a treat. 😉

Seven years.

That’s how long we’ve been making stroopwafels at Oranje Grove.

And after seven years, I think it’s safe to say… we can pretty much make them in our sleep. 😂

Now, don’t get me wrong — we LOVE our stroopwafels. We are incredibly proud of them, proud of the brand we’ve built around them, and pretty darn proud that something we started making seven years ago has become such a big part of Oranje Grove.

BUT…

When you make the same thing over and over (and over and over and over 😆) for seven years, eventually you start thinking…

What else can we do with these things?!

And that is exactly how this little adventure started.

Over the last several months, we’ve been playing around with flavours. Some sounded questionable and turned out AMAZING. Some sounded amazing and were… well… questionable. 😂

Our friends and family have been dragged into the process as official taste testers — although strangely, no one seems to complain when we show up with a container full of experimental stroopwafels.

Slowly, we started creating flavours that felt different. Fun. A little unexpected. And most importantly, flavours that felt like Oranje Grove. Flavours that are OURS.

Our Fall Flavours are out now and we have to say… we nailed these ones. 🍂

But what we're REALLY excited about is what’s coming next.

Because apparently after seven years of making stroopwafels, the solution to being tired of making stroopwafels…

…was to make WAY more kinds of stroopwafels. 😂

And honestly? We’re having so much fun with it.

Just wait until you see what’s coming next. 💙
