Shore Thing Liverpool NS Please see the about page for Tess's bio.

Tessa (Giffin) Adams opened Shore Thing Studio and Emporium in Liverpool, Nova Scotia in April 2019 after retiring from a long-term career of teaching in Halifax. With roots embedded as deep in the soil as the community itself, Tessa knew it was time to come home, to where her mother, Elaine McLeod, grew up in the first house built in Liverpool and her father, Fred Giffin, worked for Bowater Merse

y Paper Company. Once settled beside her beloved ocean, Tess turned her eye to creating an environment in which people could purchase handmade creations by the many talented artists in the area, learn how to create their own unique pieces themselves, and have a shop that provided the supplies to do it. She was thrilled to find the perfect location in the building that had housed the Advance newspaper, the very location that her mother’s career had begun. After retiring from his career in the blood lab at Queens General Hospital, Tessa’s husband, Mike Adams, joined her at the shop, and together, they have built Shore Thing into the vibrant hub of unique handmade art, classes and supplies that it is today. Growing from a core group of about 20 local artisans, it has grown into a collaboration of over 50 Nova Scotia artists and artisans with at least 80% from Queens County, whose efforts are proudly displayed for sale within the walls of the sprawling shop. True to Tessa’s vision, Shore Thing Studio and Emporium also continues to provide varied and popular instruction through classes, as well as providing art supplies to all.

✨ Please join us in welcoming a beautiful new team of artists to the Shore Thing family —Painted Jewelry Studio! ✨

This talented team creates stunning resin art and jewelry inspired by nature, flowers, ocean waves, colour, and light. From delicate pressed flower pendants and whimsical earrings to vibrant fluid art clocks, coasters, and mini canvases, every piece feels joyful, creative, and full of personality.

There’s such a lovely balance in their work — some pieces feel soft and botanical, others bold and energetic like the sea itself. We especially love the way they transform everyday items into wearable and functional art. 🌊🌸

Whether you’re searching for a special gift, a statement piece, or simply something that makes you smile, we think you’ll enjoy exploring this collection as much as we have.

Meet the Artist – Carla Zwicker

When Carla Zwicker’s children “flew the coop,” she found herself searching for something to fill the quiet of an empty nest. What she discovered instead was a deep creative joy.

Through bright colours, whimsical seaside villages, playful cats, and charming folk-art scenes, Carla created Folk Whimsy by Carla — artwork that instantly makes people smile.

Encouraged by a late dear friend and prominent folk artist, Carla submitted her paintings to the Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival in Lunenburg. Her work was accepted, and she has now been participating for 10 years.

One of the things Carla loves most is hearing people say her paintings make them feel happy — and it’s easy to see why. Her art is filled with warmth, imagination, colour, and heart.

“My whimsical cats have become a favorite. I love that my work brings not only me joy, but also those who see it.”

We’re so grateful to have Carla and her joyful folk art as part of the Shop.

✨Meet the Artist✨ - Deb Lemon
For over 30 years, glass artist Deb Lemon has been creating pieces filled with meaning, emotion, and connection.

When asked about her favourite creation, Deb immediately thought of the beautiful piece she made for her son — a work deeply personal to her heart. She also treasures the lamps she designed and built for each of her grandchildren when they were babies. Every lamp incorporates symbolism tied to their names, places of birth, family roots, her hopes for their futures, and the deep love she carries for them.

“These lamps are one-of-a-kind, just like my grandchildren are,” Deb shares. “They will last forever, reminding each of them of their grandmother’s love long after I’m gone.”

While Deb tries not to project too much meaning onto pieces that haven’t been personally commissioned, symbolism naturally finds its way into her work. More than anything, she hopes people feel something when they encounter her art — whether it’s love, nostalgia, comfort, or even reflection — and that they leave feeling deeply connected to the piece they bring home.

After more than three decades working with glass, Deb still approaches each new creation with excitement and curiosity. Her studio remains a place of joy, creativity, and a little bit of magic. This is all why she’s another perfect fit for where Heart Meets Art at Shore Thing.
