❤️ Cardinal in Kinusaiga ❤️
One of the things I love most about kinusaiga is watching a picture come to life one piece of fabric at a time.
This cardinal was created without paint or thread. Each section of fabric is carefully chosen, cut, and tucked into place to create the finished image. The process is slow, detailed, and incredibly rewarding.
Cardinals have long been associated with love, remembrance, hope, and the feeling that those we cherish are never truly far away. Combined with the gentle movement of the sky and the simple white flower, this piece carries a sense of peace and quiet presence.
Kinusaiga is often called "painting with fabric," and I can certainly see why. Every fabric brings its own colour, texture, and personality to the design.

🎨 Meet the Artist: Nancy Warnica 🎨

This week we're delighted to introduce you to potter Nancy Warnica, whose beautiful handcrafted pottery can be found here at the Shop.

When asked what she hopes people feel when they see her work, Nancy shared:

"I hope when people see my work they find something that speaks to them. A piece of pottery that makes a personal connection. A mug that feels right in their hand. A plate that begs to hold cookies for sharing with family and friends. A favourite soup or oatmeal bowl that is the perfect size. A piece that is just the right gift!"

For Nancy, working with clay is both creative and calming.

"Taking a lump of clay and forming it on the wheel is soothing to me. Moulding the clay into a form is very satisfying. Such a sense of accomplishment once a piece is thrown, trimmed and glazed."

When asked if there is a piece that holds special meaning for her, Nancy's answer speaks to the heart of handmade art:

"When my grandsons were about 5 and 7, they each created a piece on the wheel with help and glazed them. Doing this with them was a special time. Those pieces they took home and are still being used today, about 10 years later. They certainly evoke memories."

We love that story because it reminds us that pottery is more than clay. It's morning coffee in a favourite mug. It's soup shared on a rainy day. It's memories held in something made by hand.

✨ Meet the Artist: Jody Fillmore ✨

This week we're delighted to introduce you to Jody Fillmore, an artist whose creations are stitched together with love, encouragement, and a lifelong passion for making things by hand.

Jody's creative journey began at just ten years old. Her fifth-grade teacher shared a love of crafting and taught her how to crochet, quilt, paint, and make wreaths from grapevine and treasures found in nature. At home, her mother nurtured that creativity even further, teaching her embroidery, cross-stitch, card making, and painting.

"I really enjoyed arts and crafts. I took art classes all four years of high school."

In her twenties, Jody began dreaming of turning her creative talents into something more. About ten years ago, she started selling her work at a local craft crawl, and before long, her creations were being featured in consignment shops.

"I am thrilled to have my work at Shore Thing Studio and Emporium. It brings me joy to see others enjoying the work I do."

When asked if there was a piece that held special meaning for her, Jody immediately thought of three crocheted jointed teddy bears she made for her sons one Valentine's Day. Each bear held a heart and featured buttons from their grandmother's sewing box.

"My desire was that my boys would cherish them and the memories of their grandmother."

It's a beautiful reminder that handmade pieces often carry more than yarn, fabric, or thread—they carry stories, memories, and love.

Jody hopes people feel joy and happiness when they see her work. Whether she's crocheting stuffed animals, creating macramé ornaments, or making gifts for friends and family, her goal is always the same: to bring a smile to someone's face.

When we asked what "Where heart meets art" means to her, her answer couldn't have been more fitting:

"I put love in every piece I make. My desire is to create items for others to enjoy."

Through her art, Jody has discovered that she is an encourager at heart.

"I love bringing joy to others through my creations."

Her perfect creating day? A cozy blanket, a cup of tea, soft music playing, and an afternoon spent crocheting stuffed animals and creating macramé ornaments.

🧶 Meet the Artist: Ashley Feindel 🧶

If you've ever smiled when you spotted one of Ashley Feindel's crocheted characters at The Shore Thing, you're not alone.

Ashley creates adorable crochet animals and beloved characters using soft, velvety yarn, transforming simple balls of yarn into companions full of personality and charm.

When asked if there is a piece that holds special meaning for her, Ashley immediately thought of the very first crochet animal she ever made—a turtle.

"It was that turtle that got everything started for me and reminds me how far I have come with my creations. It has a special home on my TV stand in the living room."

Ashley hopes her work brings both joy and comfort to those who see it.

"I hope all that see my work, whether 1 or 100, feel joy when they see it and comfort when they own it."

Her journey into crochet began after being diagnosed with ADHD. After trying many hobbies that failed to hold her interest, she discovered videos of crocheted stuffed animals online and decided to give it a try herself.

"It became my obsession."

What started as gifts for family and friends has grown into a creative practice that brings her peace and helps her unwind after a long day.

"When I go a few days without crocheting, I can feel lost. Once I pick up a crochet hook and a ball of yarn again, I immediately start to feel calm and become centered again."

When asked what "Where heart meets art" means to her, Ashley's answer perfectly captured the spirit of handmade work:

"I put my whole heart into what I make."

And it shows.

🎨 Meet the Artist: Marg Millard 🎨

Marg Millard creates paintings that invite us to pause, look closely, and connect with the world around us.

When asked if there is a piece that holds special meaning for her, Marg immediately thought of one of her largest works, I Can See Clearly Now.

"There it was on the easel for some time and it just did not feel right. One afternoon I decided to paint over it and suddenly I was mixing on the canvas and in a couple of hours there it was. Done. That doesn't happen often enough."

For Marg, creating art is about connection. She watches people as they look at her paintings, hoping to see that moment of recognition that tells her they have found something of themselves in the piece. Art has become an important companion in her life. Living with MS, Marg made a decision years ago to learn to paint—and paint well.

"I need to work to hold and stretch my mind. If I disappear, I want to have paintings so ingrained in my brain, I will move mentally into my paintings."

When asked what "Where heart meets art" means to her, Marg offered one of the most beautiful descriptions we've heard:

"The shop is pure magic. When I walk through the door I am immediately awash with so many feelings that come from each piece. It's like listening to an opera in a way." And why does she create? Her answer was simple. "I have to." We're honoured to share Marg's work and story with you.
