Our friend Stacy sent us this old picture of our store, though it's not quite as old as her dress makes it seem! It's from 2002, when the building was known as "Ameena's Port Store".

Also that year: Port Medway Lighthouse Park officially opened in October 2002, Liverpool’s Astor Theatre celebrated its 100th birthday, average rent in the Region of Queens was $457, and Queens County had just 11,723 residents according to the 2001 Census!

Some other highlights from the whole province:

John Hamm was Premier
Nova Scotia had approximately 943,500 residents
Provincial minimum wage was $5.80 an hour
Elliot Page was in Marion Bridge + Trailer Park Boys
Halifax hosted the G7 finance ministers

What were you up to in 2002??

We have much beautiful food today thanks to a late night baking shift by . Their lemon and orange thumbprint cookies are so pretty I feel borderline emotional about it. They've also made "everything bagel" cream cheese rolls, sausage sweet pepper and scallion breakfast muffins, as well as two kinds of scones: gouda & green onion, and nectarine & honey.

We really are lucky to have such an incredible crew here! And lucky to have so many positive folks who come in here every day and let us know how special this place is.

Come see for yourself at 1615 Port Medway Road! And check out the Medway Head Lighthouse while you are here! It's a lovely drive down Long Cove Road, and on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday you can climb to the top for stunning views!

When we decided to start serving our tiered trays of scones, sweets and savouries, Shalisa made sure we knew to call it Afternoon Tea. Not High Tea, no matter how much grander that might sound!

Shalisa was, of course, correct. And the only person whose approval I was thinking of more was my beloved Welsh grandmother Betty. She has been gone for a long time, but I still don't want to let her down. So Afternoon Tea it is!

Despite the meal’s aristocratic roots, we never wanted ours to feel exclusive. We’ve worked hard to keep it as affordable as we can, so as many people as possible can experience the delight of of teapots, tiny treats and good company. (And truly we aren't fussed about what you call it!)

We are restocked with Sissiboo coffee, and the packaging has had an overhaul! Here is a quick before and after so you can see the changes, but rest assured it's the same beans you already love.

So some in for a coffee today (maybe buy some to take with you when you go!) paired with our selections of sweets and savouries. Browse our big restock of Mini's Soaps and Radical Tea Towels while you are here!

Also, Irving is playing oldies from his boombox next door so it's a great day to sit under the apple tree and listen to his selections. A classic Port Medway experience.

It’s a cloudy Saturday in Port Medway, which feels like a perfect excuse to come in for a warm drink, a little treat, and a leisurely browse.

Thanks to Izzy Francolini and birds thatgo, today’s delights include everything bagel cream cheese rolls, vegan chocolate biscotti, nectarine and honey scones, and bacon breakfast muffins.

We’ve got the music playing, tea brewing, coffee flowing, and lots of cozy places to sit and visit for a while or read a book.

So take a drive along the coast, settle in with something delicious, and see what catches your eye on the shelves. We’re at 1615 Port Medway Road until 5pm! 💛

A reminder that Crafternoon is still going strong all summer long! Every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, a lovely collection of people gathers at Rosefinch to make things, drink tea, tell stories, laugh extremely loudly, and become friends and co-conspirators.

I cannot overstate how much Crafternoon has changed my own life. When we first opened Rosefinch, I was so rusty when it came to turning acquaintances into real friends. But some of the people I first met through Crafternoon are now among my favourite people.

We are always so happy when new people show up! You can come alone or with a friend. You can come every week or pop by a few times a year. Whatever works best for you!

There is no minimum level of craftiness required to attend Crafternoon, you can just come hang out and colour one of our tiny colouring books. But if you want to learn a new skill, someone will certainly be excited to teach you. And if you would rather experiment wildly and figure it out yourself, we will be equally excited to cheer you on.

Crafternoon is a particularly great way to meet people because you do not have to walk into a room and immediately think of something dazzling to say. You can sit down, pick up your project, and let the conversation and the camaraderie happen around you.

Every Sunday, 2–5pm
1615 Port Medway Road, Port Medway

Come make something! Come make a friend! Come doodle in silence while other people chatter! We would truly love to see you. 💛

Attention community organizations who could use short-term full-time support: ASCEND applications are open again!

For the past two summers, we had full-time support for the community garden through ASCEND, and the impact has been incredible. Yesterday, we were thrilled to send several big bags of freshly harvested greens to The Landing shelter in Bridgewater.

Applications are open now for Cohort 4. Participating organizations can a worker for 19 weeks, with 100% of provincial minimum wage subsidized.

Placements begin October 19, and applications are due September 4.

You can refer a young person aged 15–30 who is not currently in employment, education, or training, or ASCEND can match you with someone from its applicant pool. Referred matches are prioritized.

For organizations and for the young workers involved, this program can be genuinely transformative. If you need help pulling an application together, let me know and I'd be happy to help!

It is beyond my wildest dreams that The Queen of Afternoon Tea is even aware of our existence. Nevermind the fact that she actually came to our tiny tea room, and THEN she gave us a glowing review?? I can't even believe it!!

Book yours here: https://rosefinch.co/products/afternoon-tea

Looking at when she posted it, and her reference to who was working, we think she might have been here the very day we switched to our Summer menu! I'm so happy we made such a positive impression. She was blown away by all the food, and especially loved Haritha's scones. High praise from an Afternoon Tea connoisseur! 🫖💛

I know I talk about these hammocks a lot, but I really want everyone to know that laying in them and listening to the birds and wind rustling through these leaves is truly restorative.

Next time you visit the café, leave yourself enough time to decompress in a hammock after. We have two! They are at the end of the garden path, under The Story Tree.
