⚔️ WHY DID ROME CHANGE ITS SWORD?

The Roman legions had conquered vast territories with the distinctive waisted blades of the Mainz gladius. Yet by the middle of the 1st century AD, a new design was taking its place.

The Pompeii gladius featured straighter edges, a shorter point and a simpler blade profile.

But WHY change something that already worked?

Was it easier to manufacture in large numbers? Did Roman soldiers prefer the new design? Or was it simply the natural evolution of swordmaking?

There's no universally accepted answer, which makes this one of the more interesting debates in Roman military history.
