Happy 125th anniversary to the Grand Theatre! On September 9, 1901, the New Grand Opera House opened its doors at 471 Richmond Street with Way Down East, featuring the now-famous proscenium arch and mural by Frederick S. Challener. It quickly became a major stop for touring productions from across North America.

Over 125 years, the Grand has seen it all. From the arrival of movies and radio, to nearly four decades as London Little Theatre, to becoming a professional theatre under Theatre London in the 1970s. Through renovations and changing audiences, the theatre has continued to evolve while preserving pieces of its history and the generations of artists, performers, staff, volunteers and audiences who have made the Grand part of London’s story.

And now, with a new season about to begin, the Grand is bringing an incredible range of shows to the stage, from campy comedy and holiday nostalgia to eerie thrillers, family drama, classic romance and a Dolly Parton musical. August is National Downtown Month! This month, we’re celebrating the businesses, entrepreneurs and people that help make downtown London a place to work, shop, dine and spend time. And this year, there’s a lot happening on the business side of downtown.

So far in 2026, 17 new businesses have opened downtown, while 4 existing businesses have expanded their operations with a potential 10 more businesses opening soon.

Behind those numbers is a downtown business community made up of more than 1,400 businesses and property owners and over 600 ground-floor storefronts. More than 43,000 people work downtown every weekday, while over 11,000 people now call downtown home.

Downtown also continues to attract people, with the Central Business District welcoming more than 43 million visits in 2025.

We’re also seeing positive movement in the downtown office market, with the office vacancy rate falling from 32% in Q1 2026 to 29.6% in Q2. Approximately 80,000 square feet of office space was leased or removed from the market during the quarter.
