A TRUE BUTCHER SHOP EXPERIENCE ON HAMILTON ROAD

Long before buying meat became a matter of grabbing a plastic-wrapped package from a supermarket cooler, there was the neighbourhood butcher... someone who knew the cuts, knew the quality and knew their customers.

That tradition is alive and well at Western Meats & Deli, located at 241 Hamilton Road.

Owner Jim Chioros took over the established Western Meats shop in 2004, bringing with him years of experience in London's restaurant and steakhouse industry. That background helped shape a business built around quality meats, knowledgeable service and good old-fashioned value.

Today, Western Meats offers everything from steaks, chops, chicken and store-made sausages to deli meats, cheeses and specialty freezer packages.

And judging by the loyal customers who continue recommending them, the neighbourhood butcher is far from becoming a thing of the past.

Thirty-five years is a long time to keep Londoners coming back for more.

Since 1991, Imperio Dos Frangos at 741 Hamilton Road has been doing exactly that... building a loyal following one chicken, rack of ribs and order of fries at a time.

This longtime Portuguese favourite has become a familiar part of Hamilton Road and London's Portuguese community.

Known for its Portuguese-style rotisserie chicken, ribs, fresh-cut fries and generous portions, Imperio has earned the kind of customer loyalty that can't be created overnight.

Sometimes rebuilding takes longer than we expect. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t working.

The Hamilton Road BIA has been through a challenging year. After significant organizational and operational difficulties, I was asked to come on board as Operations Consultant to help stabilize the organization, rebuild its foundations and get it moving forward again.

I’ll admit, it has taken more time than I originally anticipated. There have been systems to rebuild, relationships to strengthen, procedures to put in place and plenty of behind-the-scenes work that most people will never see.

But real progress is happening.

What has impressed me most has been the reception I have received from the Hamilton Road community. Businesses, residents and community organizations have welcomed me, shared their ideas, voiced their concerns and, most importantly, demonstrated that they genuinely want to see this district succeed.

That enthusiasm reminds me why this work matters.

Hamilton Road has tremendous potential. We aren't finished rebuilding yet... not even close, but we're moving forward, one solid step at a time.

And sometimes the strongest communities aren't the ones that never struggle.

They're the ones that refuse to give up.

MORE THAN 100 YEARS OF HELPING HAMILTON ROAD GET THE JOB DONE

Some businesses become part of a neighbourhood. Others become part of its history.

Summer’s Home Hardware is definitely both.

The Summer’s name has been connected to Hamilton Road for more than a century, with the business tracing its roots in the area back to the early 1920s.

Today, Summer’s Home Hardware at 526 Hamilton Road continues that tradition as the kind of neighbourhood hardware store where personal service still matters.

Some places simply belong to a neighbourhood.

The Crouch Branch of the London Public Library at 550 Hamilton Road is one of them.

Named after former Chief Librarian Richard Edwin Crouch, the library has become much more than a place to borrow a book.

It is a gathering place where children discover the joy of reading, adults access computers and resources, newcomers find connections, and neighbours come together.

In fact, the Crouch neighbourhood itself takes its name from the library - a pretty remarkable indication of just how deeply this institution is woven into the community.

Sharing the building with the Crouch Neighbourhood Resource Centre makes this location even more important, bringing library services, community supports, family programming and neighbourhood connections together under one roof.

Across the street, the Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centre and Community Centre adds another important piece to what has become a small civic hub along our commercial corridor.

At the Hamilton Road BIA, we believe strong Main Streets are about more than businesses.

They’re about people, places and institutions that give a neighbourhood its heart.
