Ursula K. Le Guin (1929–2018) was an American author celebrated as one of the most influential voices in science fiction and fantasy. Best known for The Left Hand of Darkness and the Earthsea series, she used speculative worlds to explore gender, politics, and what it means to be human. She believed reading was a transformative, almost sacred act, one that shapes the reader as much as the reader engages the text.
