it was time to make myself a sacred drum. So I got a hoop and was gifted some rawhide by a dear friend. I set to work cutting out the round and the laces from the rawhide. Then I filled a tote tub with cool water and put the rawhide to soak for 24 hours. Once soaked overnight I set to work punching holes for the laces to string through,  Centering the hoop as I went. You need to work quickly because the laces begin to dry and you need to complete the drum lacing before they turn kinda hard. I bundled the laces in a criss cross to form the handle. Now I had to allow the drum to dry. As it dried the hide tightened up really nicely - it’s sound is very nice ! I allowed it to dry for several days and then went to work with sharpie paint markers to create my design. I spent a day working and reworking my drawing so it would be perfect when I was ready to paint it on. I chose the black bird as my inspiration because whenever I am in doubt of something or myself I go outdoors and a crow will call to me as if giving me an answer. Crows are very special to me.

The drum stick was a simple task. I went outside to find a suitable branch from a willow tree beside my home. I then flaked the bark off of it and did a little  whittling to smooth out any knots. I did this with a box cutter. I then wrapped one end with very thin split scrap leather - gluing it down so I don’t lose the be**er while drumming. Once I did this I took some black leather and sewed a little sack and forced it over the end with the scrap glued on. Wound some sinew around nice and tight and it was done.

The drum bag is very important as it is a permanent home for the drum. Because I was doing a blackbird (the crow has always been with me) design I knew my accessories should be black. The bag was simple square / rectangular shapes cut from black cowhide and the flap was a natural edge piece. I decided I should line the bag just in case the dye from the leather was going to bleed - I didn’t want it to dirty the drum head. I chose some purple broad cloth that I already had in my crafting cupboard. Purple is my favourite colour. I set to work stitching the bag by hand with artificial sinew. Once the bag itself was complete I needed to braid the strap. The strap is made up of two braids joined together at the top. I used the same cowhide and added a strip of purple split leather to tie in my liner colour.

I am so proud of this work. And I can’t wait to use it !
