🌿 Size: Compact and upright, growing to about 12–18” tall and wide.
☀️ Light: Best in full sun.
🌱 Soil: Prefers well-drained, average soil and doesn’t like sitting in wet conditions.

🌿 Lady in Red Fern ❤️— a little drama for the shade garden!

Looking for something special to brighten up those shady spaces?
The Lady in Red Fern (Athyrium filix-femina ‘Lady in Red’) is a beautiful, easy-care fern with graceful green fronds and striking burgundy-red stems.

🌱 Where does it grow best?
Lady in Red prefers part shade to full shade and does best in consistently moist, rich, well-drained soil.
It’s especially happy in woodland-style gardens, shaded perennial beds, along paths, or in naturally moist areas near ponds and streams.

❄️ Hardiness: Zone 3a–8, making it a very hardy choice for Ontario gardens.

💧 Moisture: Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly during hot or dry periods.
It doesn’t want to sit in waterlogged soil, but it also doesn’t appreciate drying out.

🌿 How to use it in the landscape:
Plant it in groups or drifts for a lush woodland effect, or use individual plants as beautiful accents among hostas, heucheras and other shade-loving perennials. The red stems provide a wonderful pop of colour and contrast against green foliage.
