Why Do We Heat-Treat a Knife Blade?

Heat treatment is a critical step in the knife-making process that enhances the blade’s strength, hardness, and durability. The blade is heated to a bright cherry-red temperature, which removes its magnetic properties and prepares the steel for hardening.

Once the desired temperature is reached, the blade is quenched in a specially formulated oil. This rapid cooling process hardens the steel and increases its ability to hold a sharp edge. After quenching, the blade is secured in a vice to prevent warping as it completes the cooling process, ensuring the finished blade remains straight and true.
