Float is now available in my online shop.

52” W x 27” L and handwoven with luscious natural fibres that are sourced, produced or hand dyed regionally and mounted on a locally crafted maple holder. It’s so lovely when local artists can rely on other local artisans and producers for raw materials ☺️ A sustainable and quality driven approach to artistry and business happens every day at House of Woolly Thyme and the rich maker industry on the east coast helps to make that easy.

This weekend I took my Intro to Weaving Workshop on the road and spent an afternoon at Pentper Interiors - 172 Great George St, Charlottetown in Charlottetown, PEI with a fantastic group of new weavers. They really embraced my throw caution to the wind approach to learning a new art practice and we laughed and shared stories and cheered one another on through the workshop, creating gorgeous handwoven tapestries.

These workshops are much more than a craft workshop. We gather together in a calm, supportive space and leave our busy lives for a few hours of carefree, creative expression. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of focus and concentration throughout the afternoon, but when creating in a community space with others, it feels more like a collaborative effort and we become one another’s cheerleaders. We leave with new friends and a warm feeling as the modern weaving community grows one new weaver at a time. I’ve already received a message from a participant who has made 2 more tapestries since Saturday! What a heart exploding Monday morning message 🥰 💓

I encourage you all to make time in your busy lives for creating alongside others. Find an informal craft group or join an art class in your community. Don’t worry about having no experience. Show up, check your responsibilities at the door, learn something new, and express your creative spirit in community with others. You’ll leave with new friends, new skills and something unique and cool made by you.

Last Saturday, I spent the afternoon with a group of enthusiastic and encouraging new weavers at Bird’s Nest Cafe

Everyone shared stories, inspiration, fibres and learned a new textile art practice while creating one of a kind tapestries. I love carving out time from my own practice to share my love of weaving with a growing community of modern weavers.

I have an upcoming intro to tapestry weaving workshop in Charlottetown, PEI at Pentper Interiors - 172 Great George St, Charlottetown on October 17. Sign up through the link in my profile if you’d like to join. Space is limited and it’s already filling up! 🪡 🧶

FLOAT is a series of handwoven stories that paints the shifting beauty of Atlantic Canada in wool and natural fibres, layering waves over land by hand as weft over warp layers a tapestry design. Textile art is a balance of strength and fragility. FLOAT celebrates the resilience of east coast communities and the beauty found in a landscape forever shaped by wind, water and time.

In woven terms, a float references the passing of yarn or fibre over more than one warp thread. Woven stitches are most commonly passed over and under threads, in a repetitive, meditative pattern called the plain stitch. A float over multiple threads can be used in a weaving stitch to create intentional patterns such as the twill or linen stitch. Or a float may be unintentional, a slip or mistake, an imperfection in the stitch pattern. This paradox of woven accident and intention informs the artistic practice of hand weaving and the creative life pursued by the artist.

As an artist, I create collections of nostalgic and narrative art by hand on frame looms using both traditional and modern weaving techniques. The traditional weaving techniques learned from my mother, combined with playful and modern weaving stitches using handspun and dyed fibres mirror the intricate patterns found in maritime nature and its cultural heritage of craft and labour.

My work is an exploration of Atlantic Canada that is rich in texture, dimension, colour and a sense of belonging while reflecting the enduring relationship between people and the ocean. If you find yourself in Charlottetown, PEI, visit PENTPER INTERIORS 172 Great George St, Charlottetown and enjoy my newest exhibit, FLOAT.
