A photograph can do more than capture a moment—it can tell a story, reveal a personality, or create an entirely imagined world. Few photographers have explored this idea as memorably as Annie Leibovitz, one of the most widely recognized portrait photographers of our time.

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, Leibovitz initially studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute before discovering her passion for photography. In 1970, while still a student, she began working for Rolling Stone magazine. She became its chief photographer in 1973, photographing musicians, cultural figures, and major events.

📸 In 1983, Leibovitz joined Vanity Fair, later working regularly with Vogue. Her work expanded into fashion photography and elaborate editorial portraits featuring actors, musicians, athletes, writers, artists, and public figures.

✨ What makes her photography distinctive?

Leibovitz often combines careful composition, expressive lighting, thoughtful poses, and storytelling. Rather than simply photographing a subject as they appear, she frequently creates a setting that communicates something about their personality, public image, or the story being told.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Caravaggio (1571–1610)!

Imagine a painting where light cuts through darkness, faces reveal raw emotion, and biblical stories feel as though they are unfolding right in front of you. That was the remarkable approach of Caravaggio, the Italian painter who helped transform European art at the beginning of the Baroque period.

Born Michelangelo Merisi in Milan, Italy, Caravaggio became known by the name of the town his family came from. He moved to Rome as a young man, where his realistic style and dramatic use of light quickly attracted attention.

🖌️ His signature technique was chiaroscuro—the contrast between light and dark to create volume and depth. Caravaggio took this technique to an especially dramatic level, known as tenebrism, in which figures emerge from deep shadows into intense, focused light.

But lighting was only part of his innovation. Caravaggio painted people with striking realism, including ordinary people as models for religious figures. His subjects look human: their expressions, gestures, weathered skin, and everyday clothing make even sacred stories feel immediate and relatable.

Caravaggio’s influence spread throughout Europe. Artists who adopted aspects of his dramatic lighting and naturalistic style became known as Caravaggisti, helping shape the development of Baroque painting.

His personal life was turbulent, and after killing a man in 1606, he fled Rome. He spent his final years moving between Naples, Malta, and Sicily, continuing to create powerful works until his death in 1610.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Mark Rothko (1903–1970)!

What can a painting communicate without depicting a person, place, or recognizable object? For American painter Mark Rothko, colour, scale, and atmosphere became powerful ways to explore the depth of human experience.

Born Markus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia), Rothko immigrated to the United States with his family in 1913 and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He later moved to New York City, where he developed his artistic career.

🎨 Rothko is best known for his colour field paintings: large canvases featuring soft-edged, rectangular areas of colour layered over one another. Although these works may appear simple at first glance, Rothko carefully explored colour relationships, proportion, light, and the emotional experience of the viewer.

His artistic journey was not always abstract. Early in his career, Rothko painted urban scenes, landscapes, portraits, and figures. During the 1940s, his work moved through mythological and Surrealist-inspired imagery before developing into the abstract style for which he became famous.

By the 1950s, Rothko was creating large, immersive paintings that encouraged viewers to spend time with the work. He believed that art could communicate fundamental human emotions, including joy, tragedy, and awe.

🌑 In his later years, Rothko also created paintings using darker colours, including maroon, brown, and black. His work for the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas, is an important example of his interest in creating a contemplative environment through painting.

✨ Rothko reminds us that a painting does not need to tell a literal story to invite reflection. Sometimes, colour alone can create an atmosphere and encourage us to pause.

🎉 September 23 | Louise Nevelson

🎂 Happy Birthday, Louise Nevelson (1899–1988)!

What happens when discarded pieces of wood, old furniture parts, and forgotten objects are transformed into monumental works of art? For American sculptor Louise Nevelson, they became dramatic worlds of shadow, texture, and architectural mystery.

Born in what is now Ukraine, Nevelson immigrated to the United States with her family in 1905 and grew up in Rockland, Maine. Her father operated a lumberyard, and her early experiences with wood would later influence her artistic practice.

After moving to New York City, Nevelson studied art and explored a variety of creative disciplines, including painting, drawing, dance, and theatre. She eventually devoted herself primarily to sculpture.

🪵 Nevelson became famous for her assemblages: sculptures created by arranging and combining existing objects and materials. She collected discarded wood, furniture fragments, boxes, and architectural pieces, carefully arranging them into intricate compositions.

Many of her best-known works were painted entirely in one colour—especially black. Rather than hiding the details, the monochromatic surfaces emphasized the relationship between light, shadow, texture, and form.

Nevelson also worked in white and gold, and later expanded into materials such as steel, aluminium, and plastic. Her sculptures ranged from small constructions to enormous environments and public installations.

One of her major works, Mrs. N’s Palace, was assembled from more than one hundred interconnected objects. The piece demonstrates how Nevelson could transform individual fragments into a unified architectural environment.

Her work reminds us that discarded objects are not necessarily without value. With imagination, arrangement, and artistic vision, even the overlooked can become extraordinary.

🎉 September 20 | Dale Chihuly

🎂 Happy Birthday, Dale Chihuly (born 1941)!

Few artists have transformed the way we think about glass quite like Dale Chihuly. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Chihuly became one of the most influential figures in the American Studio Glass movement, turning blown glass into large-scale sculpture and immersive installations.

Chihuly’s journey into glass began while he was studying interior design at the University of Washington. He went on to study glassblowing with pioneering glass artist Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin and later earned his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.

A major turning point came in 1968, when Chihuly travelled to Murano, Italy, on a Fulbright Fellowship. There he studied the techniques of Venetian glassmakers and became fascinated by their collaborative approach to blowing glass. That experience would have a lasting influence on his own practice.

Chihuly is known for his exuberant use of colour, organic forms and monumental installations. His best-known series include Seaforms, Baskets, Macchia, Cylinders, Persians, Venetians, Fiori and his spectacular Chandeliers.

Rather than treating glass simply as a functional material, Chihuly pushed it toward sculpture, architecture and installation art. His enormous glass works often seem to bloom, twist, float or flow through the spaces around them.

One of his most important contributions goes beyond his own artwork: in 1971, Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, which became a major centre for glass education and experimentation.

A little art history lesson: Chihuly helped demonstrate that glass could be much more than a craft material—it could be monumental, expressive fine art.
His work reminds us that sometimes the material itself can become part of the artistic idea: heat, gravity, colour, light and movement all play a role.

🎉 September 18 | José de Rivera

🎂 Happy Birthday, José de Rivera (1904–1985)

José de Rivera was an American abstract sculptor whose work transformed metal into graceful, flowing forms. Rather than creating traditional representational sculptures, de Rivera explored the relationship between line, movement, space, and balance, often using curved steel, bronze, and aluminum.

Interestingly, de Rivera did not begin his career as a traditional fine artist. He worked with machinery, foundries, and blacksmithing before studying art. His background working with metal and machinery became an important part of his artistic practice.

De Rivera became particularly known for sculptures that appear almost like three-dimensional drawings in space. Some of his works incorporated movement, including pieces that rotated with the help of motors. His Infinity was commissioned by the Smithsonian for the building that became the National Museum of American History.

His work can be found in major American museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
