Why does Chinese culture love the full moon so much?

Part of it is in the language itself: the word for “round” (圓) lives inside the word for “family reunion” (團圓). A full moon looks like a family with no one missing.

And when someone is missing — that’s the second reason. Almost a thousand years ago, on Moon Festival night, the poet Su Shi found himself far from his younger brother. They hadn’t seen each other in years. So he wrote him a poem, and its last line became the most beloved moon line in the Chinese language: 但願人長久，千里共嬋娟 — “May we live long — and miles apart, share the same moon.” What he meant was simple: I can’t be at your table tonight. But we’re looking at the same thing. To this day, people send that line to someone they miss, every Moon Festival.

That love shows up everywhere — in poems, in paintings, even in the round “moon gates” of garden walls. And once a year it becomes a holiday: the Moon Festival, on the night the moon is fullest. This year, that’s Friday, September 25.

Every flower in the garden obeyed. One didn’t.

Legend says Empress Wu Zetian — the only woman ever to rule China in her own name — once ordered every flower in her palace garden to bloom overnight, in the dead of winter. By morning, they all had. Except the peony.

She banished it to Luoyang. It bloomed there anyway. So she had it burned to the ground.

The next spring, it came back.

Luoyang has been the City of Peonies ever since, and the flower that would not bow became the Queen of Flowers — honored for keeping to its own nature when that was the dangerous thing to do.

The peony is a flower Shen Yun keeps returning to, in dance after dance. The Golden Tang Peony Necklace is drawn from those costume designs.

The lotus is more than a beautiful flower. 🪷

For centuries, it has carried layers of meaning in Chinese culture — integrity, harmony, abundance, and blessings for a good life.

出淤泥而不染 — rising from the mud, yet remaining unstained.

Even the sounds of its name can become part of the symbolism: 荷 hé echoes 和 hé, “harmony,” while lotus and fish together can express the wish 連年有餘 — abundance year after year.

In Chinese art, flowers aren’t always just decoration. Sometimes, they carry a message.

And sometimes, that meaning becomes something you can wear.
