A month that above all others, demands faith in systems carved out of millennia.

My January altar is typically a sparse one.
Last year’s Summer Solstice wreath provides a protective circle, within it sits a small token of candlelight.
Other small treasures of what was and what will be await their time.

And this morning, before opening my shop I will feed the Wildlings and read The Big Snow in honour of this Wintery magic.

They would say, be diligent.
Do it always.
Remain true to the outlines and rules - something will come.
Lately though, I open my window at night - the gentle presence of the moon infiltrating my sleep. Soft, unintelligible whisperings on the landscape of snow and skin.
There exists a wellspring of potential in the dark of night,
the supposed dead of Winter.
With me, more devoted than diligent.

More insinuation than dramatic entrance, Paper Birch quietly crafts a landscape - an artist skilled in the medium of soil, leaf mould and pollen.
Though widely known as The Lady of the Woods thanks in part to an ancient association with renewal, one of the many talents wielded by this tree species is the ability to fulfil both male and female reproductive roles within a single tree.
Distinctive white and papery bark a beacon to all seeking shelter and sustenance in hard times. But also a rally cry against the blasphemy that is a monoculture woodland.
