So sad to see this Canadian treasure end. We were so pleased to be able to advertise in this wonderful magazine.

TO THE MANY READERS, ADVERTISERS, FRIENDS AND FOLLOWERS OF CANADIAN ANTIQUES & VINTAGE MAGAZINE

It saddens us to share that 2564862 Ontario Inc., the company doing business as Canadian Antiques & Vintage magazine, has ceased publication. The corporation is no longer in business.

It has been coming for some time.

You may recall that in 2020, during the pandemic, we were forced by the economy to temporarily close for much of the year. With antique shops shuttered, all antique shows closed, and auctioneers in the space still learning how to pivot to online, our ad revenue base went to zero — literally zero — in the blink of an eye. At the same time, the pandemic caused readers and collectors to watch their pennies, and new subscriber numbers as well as renewals tumbled.

Together, upon re-opening later in 2020, subscription and ad revenue had dropped by a cumulative 48% ongoing, and that became our new baseline post-pandemic. We worked hard to recover. Yet, across the past few years, the corporation never reached its previous revenue benchmarks.

This downturn in revenue also came at a time of significant vendor cost increases — most importantly, annual often double-digit percentage increases in the costs of paper and printing, postage, list management, and mailing house services, all central to producing a physical publication. Again, these unavoidable increases came at a time of inescapable revenue declines.

Then, and most recently, American tariffs caused many American advertisers to disappear from publications outside the USA, like CA&V, due to the challenges of cross-border buying, selling and shipping of antiques on the American side, and purchasing resistance of American pieces – sometimes logical, sometimes philosophical – from the Canadian side.

Finally, the business also faced the intersection of two significant trends. One, the organic decline of print magazines as a viable business model. Two, the organic decline of the ‘pure antiques’ space in Canada – a small niche market to begin with, more recently seeing an accelerating decline for various reasons that are unimportant here except for the fact of having created a vastly narrower collector and dealer marketplace. These two organic declines – print magazines generally and the antiques market in Canada specifically – coming together as they did, sealed the company’s fate.

The product itself – Canada’s only national magazine about antiques, fine art, folk art, and vintage collectables – that was produced six times a year? The company remains immensely proud of it. Moreover, the business also remains proud of how the magazine has served both readers and advertisers across the decades.

This cessation of business comes with a deep sense of mutual loss as another national print magazine closes. A space where where writers once shared stories — especially, in this case, Canadian stories – about antiques, art, and vintage, plus the people and their passion for lovely things, is no more. The magazine was bigger than words and pictures – it extolled the virtues of Canadian material heritage in a larger and more holistic sense.

Thanks to the hard-core and supportive subscribers, readers and advertisers who stuck with Canadian Antiques & Vintage magazine over the decades. We hope – we know – you enjoyed and appreciated the publication. You are a special group.

This FB page will be up and available for a short time yet.

We know you will have thoughts and comments, so feel free to add them below should you wish.

Sincerely…
