About the Potters:

Grahame (aka The "Hairy" Potter) and Debbie Wales have been making functional and one-of-a-kind pottery for over 40 years. Using both porcelain and stoneware clay, they fire with propane in a large reduction kiln yielding a wide variety of rich, luscious glazes in earth tones, jade-green celadon, vibrant blues, and a lustrous metallic, iron-saturated glaze. Their functional pots which include dinner sets, tea pots, casseroles, mugs, butter dishes, goblets, bowls, lamps, serving dishes, ikebanas, pitchers, platters and sinks are meant to be used and are lead-free, microwave, and dishwasher safe. Grahame specializes in wheel thrown pieces while Debbie has branched off to create square and rectangular work as well as one-of-a-kind carved wall hangings that depict the beauty of the Haliburton Highlands.

This is our first firing without Grahame. Our daughter Jenn and I loaded the kiln last Monday and fired Tuesday and Wednesday with great trepidation. This morning Jenn and a couple of friends and I unloaded the kiln and we are thrilled with the results. The copper reds and the celadon are really lovely.

*I added some process photos at the bottom… Mom’s face before we opened the kiln door and then after, says it all! (Jenn)

I am loving being back in the studio every day. I just made Grahame’s style of mugs… but of course I am certainly not as fast as he was! I hope to fire the kiln at the beginning of July, if all goes well.

It is with profound sadness that we share with you the passing of Grahame aka The Hairy Potter - amazing husband, father, poppy, and friend.
The Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands put into words what an impact he had on the arts community.
His death has left a huge hole in our hearts.
At this time, Earth and Fire Pottery is going to be closed.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a good friend and master potter, Grahame Wales, who passed away on Dec 4, 2025.

Grahame and his wife Debbie have been members of the ACHH for many years and have made a significant contribution to the artistic life of the county through their magnificent work and their interactions with all who knew them.

For many years, Earth and Fire Pottery was a favourite stop on the Studio Tour where “the Hairy Potter” would delight guests with his amazing skill at the wheel and his warm humour.

Grahame will be remembered as a highly skilled, creative artist who was never too busy to share a joke or to make someone laugh. He was generous with fellow potters, sharing his vast knowledge and experience.

Let’s raise a glass of scotch in memory of this remarkable artist and friend.

Our condolences to Debbie, Jenn, Josh
