Kerdi patch failing? Your overlap is too small.

Everyone patches a hole in Kerdi membrane the same way —
cut a piece slightly bigger than the hole, thinset it down,
call it waterproof.

It isn't. Schluter's spec is 2" of overlap onto sound
membrane on every side. Not the hole. Every side.

Patch a 3" hole and you need a 7" piece minimum.

Unmodified thinset, full coverage, no voids at the seam.
Flood test before you tile.

Shower waterproofing slope: you sloped the tile to the drain.
Did you slope the waterproofing underneath it?

Water doesn't just sit on top of the tile. Some of it gets below
the surface and reaches the waterproofing layer.

If that layer is flat, that water has no path to the drain. It sits.

Minimum shower pan slope is 1/4" per foot to the drain — TCNA.
And it applies to the waterproofing, not just the tile.

Running a clamping-ring drain and a liner? That pre-slope under
the liner is its own separate step. Running Kerdi or Hydroban?
You slope the bed and the membrane follows it.

It's the detail you never see once the shower's closed up. It's
also already decided whether that water drains or sits.

Grout cracking in your shower corners? It's not bad grout.

Every "caulk vs grout in shower corners" argument
misses the actual reason.

A corner is a change of plane. The two surfaces expand
and contract independently. Grout is rigid — it can't flex
with that movement.

So it cracks. Every time. That's not a defect, that's physics.

TCNA EJ171 is specific: flexible sealant at every change
of plane. Inside corners. Floor to wall. Around the curb.
Around every fixture. Two surfaces meet — sealant goes there.

And not siliconized acrylic. Not "grout caulk."

Your crack isolation membrane is too narrow.

Most guys paint a 6" band over the crack and call it done.

But if your tile is 4 feet long, most of that tile is still
bonded straight to the slab that's moving.

Slab shifts. Tile has nowhere to go. It snaps.

MAPEI's spec: your band runs 3× the width of your
biggest tile. 24×48 tile = a 12 ft band, centered on the crack.

Hairline cracks only — up to 1/8". If that slab is actually
moving, this is the wrong product entirely.

Picking a drain isn't a style choice — it's picking your entire waterproofing method. Waterproofing a steam shower the same way as a regular shower? That's the callback. TTMAC and TCNA both require a bonded, low-perm rated membrane for steam. Know the rating before you quote the job.
