The final dossier is open. 🌿🔎
Welcome to Part 4 of Houseplant Scandals, Controversies & Dark Secrets — the last chapter in this four-part series.
Case Files 19–24 take us through:
• Pandemic mail-order wet sticks
• The Lyon Botanical Garden theft wave
• The Nymphaea thermarum heist
• The tissue culture market crash
• Chop-and-prop vandals
• The multi-million dollar cycad syndicate
This final batch might be the clearest reminder yet that plant collecting is never just about beauty.
It can also be about speculation, theft, conservation, black-market trade, opportunism, and what happens when rarity becomes more valuable than responsibility.
Some of these stories are cautionary. Some are criminal. Some changed the way collectors buy plants altogether.
But they all come back to the same thing:
Ask questions. Know the source. Protect the plant.
And now that all 24 case files are officially open, I want to know: which scandal from Parts 1–4 surprised you the most?
And more importantly… should I keep digging? 👀🌿

The case files are open again. 🌿🔎
Welcome to Part 3 of Houseplant Scandals, Controversies & Dark Secrets — and this round is all about the stories hiding in plain sight.
Case Files 13–18 cover:
• Single Hoya kerrii leaves
• Dieffenbachia and the “dumb cane” naming legacy
• Tradescantia zebrina and the history behind its old common name
• Dudleya poaching
• Dyed blue Phalaenopsis orchids
• “Monstera albo seeds” and the seed scam
Some of these stories are about marketing. Some are about language. Some are about exploitation, poaching, or selling people something that is not quite what it appears to be.
And that is exactly why plant knowledge matters.
The more you know about what you are buying, growing, and calling a plant, the harder it becomes for hype, bad information, or misleading sales tactics to take root.
Part 4 is still to come.
So tell me below: which of these six case files surprised you most? And if there is a houseplant scandal, controversy, or dark botanical secret you think belongs in the final chapter, I want to hear it. 👇
