🍄 Unsung Heroes of the Food Forest: The White Domecap! 🌳✨

When you find a massive cluster of mushrooms like the White Domecap (Leucocybe connata) growing in your permaculture site or garden, your first thought might be: "Can I eat it?"🛑

The short answer: No! While older foraging books used to list it as edible, modern science has shown it contains toxic compounds. It should strictly be left off the dinner plate. But just because we can't eat it doesn't mean it isn't working overtime to feed your ecosystem! In a food forest, these saprotrophic (decomposing) fungi are absolute rockstars. Here is what they are doing underground right now:

🍂 1. Premium Nutrient Cyclers: They secrete powerful enzymes that break down stubborn organic matter like dead roots, dropped leaves, and thick grass thatch—turning them into bioavailable food for your fruit trees and berry bushes!

💧 2. Living Underground Sponges: The massive mycelial network acts like a sponge beneath the dirt. It traps and holds onto moisture during heavy rains, slowly releasing it to surrounding plant roots during dry spells.

🌱 3. Natural Soil Aerators: By weaving microscopic threads through tight, compacted earth, they naturally loosen clay and heavy foot-traffic paths, making room for air, water, and new plant roots to thrive.

🪱 4. Ecosystem Builders: These dense clusters create a habitat that feeds and shelters beneficial soil micro-fauna, attracting predatory insects that keep harmful garden pests in check.

Seeing these pops of white in your grass isn't a problem—it's a sign of a highly active, thriving, and healthy living soil network! 🙌🌱

Button stage red winecaps. "Planted" in two locations in the food forest in Oak woodchips. Thanks to my friend jen Jen's Perennials! Such a fantastic idea. The amount of mushrooms from these 2 patches is incredible! The fairly consistent rajn every 4-5 days this summer has been incredible to many things in the food forest.

I've spent some time trying to find the right term for what we're doing here and honestly, I don't think one exists.

It's part permaculture. Part regenerative agriculture. Part homesteading. Part food forestry. Part localism. Part community resilience. Part self-reliance. Part old-fashioned common sense.

But none of those terms quite capture it.

The goal isn't to "live off-grid."

The goal isn't to become completely self-sufficient.

The goal is to build enough abundance that you always have options.

We grow food when possible instead of buying it.
We trade when possible instead of purchasing.
We learn skills instead of outsourcing everything.
We build community instead of isolation.
We improve land instead of extracting from it.
We share knowledge instead of gatekeeping it.

Every fruit tree planted is future food.
Every berry bush is future abundance.
Every skill learned is one less thing you're dependent on someone else to do.
Every relationship built with a neighbour, farmer, tradesperson, or gardener makes the whole community stronger.

What has surprised me most is the community that has appeared along the way.
Not always the people I expected.
Sometimes it's the neighbour who shows up with a trailer. The retired farmer with advice. The person who trades plants for maple syrup. The stranger who becomes a friend over a conversation about fruit trees. The customer who comes for a tomato plant and leaves with a new idea.

Maybe the closest term I've found is "Abundant Independence."

Not because we don't need each other.

Quite the opposite.

Because real independence isn't isolation—it's having enough food, skills, resources, and community around you that you have choices.

That's what we're trying to build here.

One tree, one garden bed, one skill, one neighbour, and one season at a time.
