I've pulled many trees and pieces of equipment out of some tough situations before using winches but never have I used a Capstan winch and rope. The scars on...

I had an interesting and very knowledgeable group from Taiwan tour our woodlot today. These folks are involved in tree planting back in Taiwan but not in the way we plant here. They are planning and developing ways to plant trees in very difficult situations, including sandy soils along the coast. I was very I’m impressed how well they knew many of our native species. We covered most of our woodlot as I explained some of the things that we do. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. 🌲🌳 🇨🇦 🇹🇼

I was out doing some pruning on our White Pine and Red Oak trees. It’s a continuous job that I do enjoy doing. The reason I do this pruning is to create knot free “clear” wood that has much higher value than knotty wood when it is eventually sawn into lumber or turned into veneer. Managing a woodlot for higher value is a never ending process.
I’ve put captions under each of the photos below to explain how and why I do this pruning work. 🌳🌲🌳🌲🌳

A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker stopped by today to poke around in our maple tree. This is the species that is often heard pounding on metal to make as much noise as possible. Apparently, the louder he is the better she likes it. Wood just doesn’t make enough sound for them!! 🤣

How did we do one week of May already and we haven't told you about our special yet?!!

And it is special this month!

In German you say "Alles neu macht der Mai" which basically means that May is a month of renewal. But we do get that thing with showers and flowers too... 😉

So we thought why not do our guts some good this May:
Our wrap is made with the fabulous fermented Carrot Ginger Kraut from Farmacy + Fermentary, lots of greens and a few of cukes, a tad of house-made tahini sauce, and then chicken or falafel for protein. 🧡

$15 all month long.

And those jars of fermented goodness are now also available with us until quantities last.

Happy May!
May there be just enough showers but plenty of flowers. 🌷🪻🌺🌸🌼

Of all the plants on PEI, I think Mayflowers (Epigaea repens) are the ones with which Islanders have the deepest connection. If you haven’t collected Mayflowers yourself, I’ll bet someone in your family has. For many, this flower’s beautiful aroma instantly conjures up pleasant memories. The tr...

Spalted beech is becoming one of my favourite woods. This wood is from our son’s woodlot. To me, it’s as beautiful as any exotic wood that you’ll find anywhere. My hand turned wood pens make a unique and useful gift for anyone and any occasion. Graduation is coming up right about now!
I love finding interesting locally grown woods… 🌳✍️
