The "right to bear arms" amendment, also known as the Second Amendment in the US Constitution, was written primarily to ensure the ability of citizens to form a well-regulated militia, acting as a check against a potentially tyrannical federal government, and to safeguard the states' ability to defend themselves, stemming from a fear of a large standing army after the American Revolution; essentially, allowing citizens to possess fi****ms to protect their liberty and resist oppression if necessary.
