Changing a blade is one of those steps that is much easier to understand once you see it done.

This is Parker's own demonstration of the Flight. About thirty seconds, and worth it if you are new to a three-piece razor, or if you have ever nicked a finger closing one.

Three knots, three jobs.

BOAR. Stiff at first, splits at the tips as it breaks in, and ends up very good at working hard soaps. Needs a few weeks of use first.

BADGER. Holds the most water of the three, so you get fine control over dilution. Softer on the face, slower to dry.

SYNTHETIC. Dries fastest, keeps its shape, same backbone from the very first shave. No break-in at all.

There is no best. There is the one that suits your soap and your patience.

The tub or the tube? Almost every new wet shaver asks this in the first week.

Both build lather with a brush, both work with any safety razor, and both will out-perform canned foam. The difference is how much work they ask of you and how forgiving they are while you are still learning.

Our answer: buy a cream first. It lathers in seconds, it is difficult to get wrong, and it will teach you what a good lather feels like without much practice.

Move to a soap once you know what you are aiming for. A soap is firm, it takes a properly loaded brush and a bit more patience, and a puck lasts a great deal longer than a tube.

Good prep is about time, not temperature.

Hair softens as it absorbs water and that takes a few minutes. Very hot water does not speed it up, it just leaves the skin unhappy before you have started.

Shave after a shower where you can. Otherwise hold a warm damp towel on your face while you load the brush. By the time the lather is ready, so is the beard.

A new boar brush feels like a scrub pad. That is not a fault and you have not bought the wrong thing.

Boar bristle starts relatively stiff and the tips gradually soften and split with repeated use. It does not tell you what it will feel like long-term after the first few shaves.

One razor, every setting.

Two shavers, same razor, same soap. One calls Feather the best blade ever made. The other cannot finish a shave with it.

Both are telling the truth. Blade preference is a fit between the edge, your beard and your skin, not a ranking, and no chart is going to tell you where you land. That is the whole reason samplers exist.

There are two ways to use one. Take a curated set and let someone else make the choices, or build your own from individual tucks and test only what you are curious about. Neither is better. The split usually comes down to whether you want the decision made for you, or want to make it yourself.

What decides the outcome is not which route you take, it is how you run the test. Most people change three things at once and then blame the blade.

Myth: a more expensive razor gives a better shave.

Past a certain point you are paying for materials, finish and machining tolerances, not for closeness. What actually changes your shave is the blade, the angle, the lather and the pressure. All four cost almost nothing to improve.

Buy a good razor once, then spend a month on the other four.

Airport security is where a good shaving kit usually goes wrong, and Canada runs its own list.

Start with the part people get wrong. A safety razor with the blade still loaded is checked bag only. The same razor with the blade taken out is fine in your carry-on. The razor was never the problem. The blade is.

That is a Parker Flight above, in the three pieces it comes apart into. Nothing sharp in the picture, which is rather the point.

Blade School 05: passes.

Chasing smooth in a single pass usually means pressing, and pressure is one of the most common causes of irritation. Reducing the hair in stages tends to work better: with the grain, then across, then against if your face tolerates it.

Re-lather before every pass. Never shave on bare skin.
