Honouring a Piece of Saint-Henri History ❤️

Canada Malting has been part of the Saint-Henri landscape since 1905. Abandoned since 1985, its weathered silos and industrial buildings have become an unmistakable part of our neighbourhood.

In 2019, a little splash of pink appeared high above the silos. Little Pink quickly became a new Saint-Henri icon.

This place is personal to me. I’ve had my studio in Saint-Henri since 1994 and moved into the neighbourhood in 2012. That June, while walking my dog Chelsea, I took my first photograph of Canada Malting. It was already showing its age.
The second photograph was taken this summer, 14 years later. The difference is striking. Siding and brick have disappeared, and the building continues to deteriorate.

Now, with news that this historic factory is crumbling and may eventually have to be demolished, we could lose not only an important piece of Saint-Henri’s industrial heritage, but Little Pink along with it.

Photography has always been my way of preserving the places that make Montreal feel like Montreal. So this holiday season, I’m turning Canada Malting and Little Pink into something we can keep.

A new Canada Malting + Little Pink holiday ornament will be available November 1, 2026.
