Argo Bookshop

Argo Bookshop Established in 1966, Argo is the oldest independent English-language bookstore in the city of Montreal. Argo Bookshop was founded by Mr. West between St. Mr.

John George in 1966 on the south side of Ste-Catherine St. Marc and du Fort. After a fire the following year, the shop relocated to across the street to 1915 rue Ste. Catherine West. Business was slow in the first years of the Argo, but Mr. George deeply cared for his store, and the community of readers that grew around it, so he kept to it. George became ill in the fall of 2005, but continued to

work full time up until the morning of his admission to hospital in January of 2006. In October 2021, the Argo again moved, anchoring itself now at 1841-A rue Ste Catherine Ouest, just a half block from its home for 52 years. The new management continues to believe in the example set by Mr. George in serving the readers and writers of Montreal. We provide a well-curated selection of fiction and non-fiction books, a welcoming place to sit, read, and chat, and host events regularly, including readings, book clubs, lectures, and more. Located in the heart of the city, we aim to provide a community space for readers of all interests and ages.
