The Word Bookstore

The Word Bookstore The Word is an independent secondhand bookstore located two blocks east of McGill University in the heart of downtown Montreal.

Since opening our doors in 1975 we have offered a wide selection of literature, philosophy and poetry. The Word also features an assortment of books in the fields of drama, history, political science, religion and more. The shopper on a tight budget need look no further than our one-dollar shelf and fifty-cent pile which feature new books on a daily basis. Indeed, regular customers will tell you t

hat they have built entire libraries out of the gems they spotted in these sections alone. They may also tell you that browsing the shelves at The Word is often a serendipitous experience: wander in looking for a Jonathan Franzen novel and leave with that edition of The Odyssey that has eluded you for years. Or, pick up a hardcover book from our new arrival section and discover a 50-year-old newspaper clipping about the author tucked in among the back pages.

One word: party 🎉

On Saturday, June 20th, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, we are gathering at The Word to cap off our online crowdfunding campaign and help us reach our $50,000 goal to restore the facade of the building.

Bahia Latin will bring the live music. Our neighbours, friends, readers, students, booksellers, and the whole community that has carried this campaign will come together under one roof to celebrate The Word and help push us over the finish line.

Suggested donation at the door: $10. No one will be turned away.

This is more than a party. It is a chance to show up in person for a place that has been part of Montreal’s literary life for generations.

Tag the friends you want to bring in the comments. Bring someone who loves books. Bring someone who loves live music. Bring someone who believes small cultural spaces are worth protecting.

Let’s fill the room. Let’s celebrate The Word. Let’s restore the facade together.

More details coming soon.

Heritage buildings showcase our city's personality. Federico reminds us why Montreal's historic architecture holds value for the community.

Only 6 days remain in our One Word campaign. Help us fund the restoration that will keep The Word standing for decades.

CAGE, John. M: Writings '67-'72. London, 1973. First British edition. John Cage was a composer, philosopher, and provocateur who spent decades dismantling the boundaries between music, language, and silence. This collection of writings from his most fertile period is itself a performance on the page, mixing mesostics, lectures, and essays in forms as unconventional as the ideas they carry. Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. $50 CAD.

FAULKNER, William. The Mansion. New York: Random House, 1959. First edition, first printing. Octavo, black cloth. The concluding volume of the Snopes trilogy, following The Hamlet and The Town. Faulkner's twenty year reckoning with Flem Snopes and the world he corrupted. Very Good in a Good dust jacket. The jacket shows honest wear to the spine with chipping and surface loss at the ends, but the iconic blue and orange design remains bright and fully legible. A solid, presentable copy of a major American novel in its original first printing. $150 CAD.
