When Jack Harlow visited our store, it started, as these things tend to, with Jack wandering the shelves and telling us what he likes to read.

So Aude started building a stack: Deborah Levy, Ayşegül Savaş.
Then, somewhere between the shelves, Jack mentioned he was reading Rachel Cusk’s Transit. We looked at each other. Second Place was going in the stack. An easy choice for Aude, and one of her personal favourites.

The result? A very De Stiil reading list. Here’s what made the stack, and why.

Proust mood. How to get through Proust and a few words of encouragement from Aude:

- Don’t rush. Proust is not an author to conquer between two train stops.
- Lean into Proust's catty humour. He'll make you laugh out loud.
- Read for the style, not just the plot, of which there is none.
- And most importantly: give yourself permission to take your time. Proust has been waiting for you for a century. He can wait a little longer.
