Tomorrow is October 4 — Sisters in Spirit Day.

Here in northern B.C., this isn't something far away. We have the Highway of Tears running right through our communities.

There are documented cases of our own Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who have gone missing or been murdered. There are also family stories that never made it onto the official lists.

So how many from our own communities have been affected over the past 50 years?

And if ours is just one single community along this stretch of road, how many families and communities along the Highway of Tears have been carrying this same loss?

The exact number is unknown. Even the numbers that have been officially documented don't tell the whole story.

And while tomorrow's observance is specifically about missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, we know our men and boys have also been affected by violence and disappearances. Their families carry that loss too.

This is why Sisters in Spirit matters.

I'm sharing this post from the Native Women's Association of Canada about the 231 Calls for Justice.

For anyone who needs support, the MMIWG2S+ support line is 1-844-413-6649.

The 231 Calls for Justice provide a path toward ending the ongoing violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Families and survivors have made their calls for change clear.

As we approach Sisters in Spirit Day, remembrance must be accompanied by accountability, implementation, and meaningful action.

We are in the fall and winter months now, so we’ve decided that our hours will be according to bookings.

Starting this October, we’ll be working on a lot of workshops — both in-house and on-site, wherever that may be.

The store is a studio for the winter and can be accessed by appointment, as well as through our in-house private bookings.

So if you’d like to come by, have a look around, pick something up, or book some time with us, just reach out and we’ll find a time that works! ❤️
