Are there families of California Quail running around in your yard?

Listen for their distinctive "Chi-ca-go" calls in areas with low lying shrubs and ground cover.

Did you know?
🍂 coveys of quail can consist of anywhere from 20 to 200 birds?
🍂 Quail can sometimes gather in coveys during nesting season, and raise their young communally. This actually increases the survival rate of both the parents AND the young!
🍂 juvenile quail are up and running basically as soon as they're born, chasing their parents around.
🍂 young quail, once they're past the fledgling stage, will look very similar to the female but with an even shorter top knot.
🍂 The distinctive question mark shaped top knot of the California Quail is actually a bundle of feathers all together.

California Quail can enjoy
🌻chipped sunflower seeds
🌾white millet
🌽cracked corn
in open tray feeders or sprinkled directly on the ground.

It's the perfect time to pull down your nest boxes and get them ready for the winter!

Hopefully, you chose a box that lets you get inside easily for cleaning.

Our cedar nest boxes have a hinged front held in place by the lower screw to make it simple and quick to clean out your box, even if you want to leave it mounted!

When cleaning your nest box, make sure to
🏠 remove dirt, debris, and old nests from inside
🏠 check for insects, bee's nests, and spider webs
before putting your box either back up or away for the winter.

If you decide to leave the nest box up, birds may decide to use it as a roosting box during the cold weather. Make it easier for them by
🐦‍⬛ blocking ventilation holes near the top of the box
🐦‍⬛ adding a few branches or dowels to be used as perches
🐦‍⬛ filling the bottom of the box with woodchips for insulation

You can also purchase a roosting box to put up in place of your nest box, to give small flocks a safe place to roost in the cold weather.

If you’re wanting to add a boost of colour and pollinator food to your garden, now’s the time to do one simple thing that’ll kill two birds with one stone (metaphorically! don’t actually kill any birds, please).

Add some native wildflowers to your backyard!

🌼 Sowing native wildflower seeds at the end of summer into early autumn will have them sprouting the following spring and summer.

Our native plants naturally
🌺 drop
🌺 fling
🌺 or air drift
their seeds before winter arrives.

🥀 They don’t do any prep, they simply let nature take its course.
🥀 The seeds naturally stratify with the cold and wet of winter, readying themselves for the warmth to come.
🥀 Plus, since they're native, they don’t need special attention, and will self seed, perpetuating and expanding your garden once mature.

Remember, when you sow the seeds
🌺 lightly scruffle a little soil over the seeds to hide them from birds.
🌺 Very lightly, mind you, you don’t want to smother them, and some need the sunlight.
🥀 where you sowed them.
🥀 If you don’t, you may very well w**d the sprouts out only to wonder what happened to all of the flowers that were supposed to grow. (I do this every year!)

How busy is your suet feeder? (and what do you have in it?)

Suet is high in protein and fat, making it an excellent source of energy for birds.

When choosing a suet block, make sure
🥜 to pick one with little to no bird seed
🥜 to check it has at least 6% crude protein
🥜 it includes peanuts, peanut butter, or insects as they are bird favourites
🥜 it's made using real beef kidney suet and not tallow, which has a lower melting point
🥜 to hang it somewhere you can enjoy your birds

Common backyard birds that are attracted to suet feeder include
🐦‍⬛ all woodpeckers
🐦‍⬛ Bushtits
🐦‍⬛ chickadees
🐦‍⬛ nuthatches
🐦‍⬛ the occasional Dark-eyed Junco

You can also grate suet into an open tray, or swing by for some suet nuggets to give your ground feeding birds a treat!
