Green Thumb Garden Centre A local, and family owned, Garden Centre that focuses mainly on Canadian grown plants and unique garden ware. Happy Planting!

We have a really great team of staff and are happy to help you whether you are just getting started or a seasoned Grower. Green Thumb Garden Centre is locally and family owned. We’re committed to helping new gardeners successfully get started while also offering species that will intrigue the most experienced gardener. Our team will help you decide what will best fit your needs by drawing on their knowledge as well as the knowledge of the experienced staff at our sister wholesale company, Green Thumb Nurseries. With many years in both wholesale and retail horticulture, we provide detailed local insight for gardening and landscaping on Vancouver Island. Our relationship with the wholesale side of the industry allows us to give you more options on plant sizes and extensive access to larger specimens. Being from Vancouver Island, we are dedicated to sourcing as much of our product as possible locally with the majority of our stock coming from the mid-island area. We especially focus on reducing the amount of pesticides used in the process of growing plants. Currently, plants grown on site at our partner Green Thumb Nurseries thrive from the many beneficial insects that have been used to control pests over the last few years. These beneficial insects remain with the plants when you take them home and can help to maintain a healthy plant once it is in your landscape. We want to help you make your yard and garden beautiful places to relax in and enjoy. So please, stop in for a visit and see what we’ve got in store!

Looking for a plant with some serious personality?
Meet Sophora prostrata 'Little Baby'! If you love plants that look like living sculptures, this quirky beauty needs a spot in your collection.

Native to New Zealand but perfectly suited to our creative garden pots on Vancouver Island, it is famous for its intricate, zig-zagging coppery branches and tiny, bead-like green leaves. As it grows, it forms a dense, geometric tangle that looks stunning against a minimalist backdrop.

It makes a fantastic, low-maintenance statement plant for a modern patio container, a bright sunroom, or a sheltered courtyard. It loves bright, sunny spots to keep those golden-copper branches vibrant. Give it sharply draining soil, like our other coastal favorites, it hates sitting in soggy roots!

We have a limited batch of these architectural wonders in the greenhouse right now. Come grab one to add some instant design flair to your space! We're open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Looking for a plant that brings dramatic autumn color without dropping its leaves? Meet Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans'.

This unique evergreen conifer is a true shapeshifter. During the summer, it sports a lush, soft green coat. But as soon as our crisp September/October nights roll around the whole plant blushes into this magnificent, rich coppery/purple and bronze shade that lasts all winter long!

It's hardy, low maintenance, and stands out beautifully against our grey, rainy winter skies. Plant one to anchor your garden beds or frame a woodland border!

Have you ever seen a conifer change color like this? Come visit the nursery to see them in person! We're open daily from 9am to 5pm!

Windmill Palm 'Trachycarpus fortunei'
Who says the Pacific Northwest can't feel tropical? These beautiful Windmill Palms are the perfect way to add instant vacation vibes to your patio, pool deck, or garden borders all year round!

This robust palm makes a great landscape accent; tolerates drought and adapts to a wide variety of soils; a very hardy palm that is quite resistant to cold spells. Windmill Palm features showy panicles of yellow flowers hanging below the branches in mid summer. It has attractive dark green evergreen foliage. The lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and remain dark green throughout the winter. The fruits are showy navy blue drupes displayed from late summer to mid fall.

This is a relatively low maintenance tree, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. It has no significant negative characteristics. Windmill Palm will grow to be about 30 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 20 feet. It has a high canopy of foliage that sits well above the ground, and should not be planted underneath power lines. As it matures, the lower branches of this tree can be strategically removed to create a high enough canopy to support unobstructed human traffic underneath. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 50 years or more.

Ready to swap out those tired summer annuals? Meet the ultimate fall multitasker!

If your patio pots or garden borders are looking a little bare, Heuchera is exactly what you need. Just look at this incredible range of colors we have in store! From the vibrant punch of red to electric lime greens, ruffled coppers, and moody plums, they bring instant texture and life to the garden.

Why Vancouver Island gardeners love them:
Year Round Foliage: Most varieties stay evergreen (or "ever-purple"!) through our mild Island winters.
Shade Champions: They are perfect for brightening up those dark, shaded corners under our tall Douglas firs or cedars.
Versatile: Use them right now as the centerpiece of your autumn container displays, then plant them out in the garden next spring!

Pair them with some ornamental grasses or winter pansies for a stunning porch makeover. Swing by the greenhouse this weekend to pick out your favorite color palette!

The ultimate fall & winter succulent for the Island! Meet Sempervivum 'Sunset' (Hens & Chicks).

While most tropical succulents need to come indoors when the wet West Coast fall sets in, these rugged beauties thrive outside year round!
Named 'Sunset' for the stunning warm tones they develop as the seasons change, they feature perfectly geometric rosettes that look like living art.

Island Planting Tips:
Where to put them: Rock gardens, rock wall crevices, fairy gardens, or low patio bowls.
Soil: They aren't picky, but they must have excellent drainage to withstand our winter rains. Mix plenty of sand or grit into your soil!
Sun: Give them full sun to bring out their deepest, richest sunset colors.

Stop by to see our selection and grab a few today! We're open 9am to 5pm daily!
