Calling all fibre artists! 🧶✨

If you’re coming to the Nelson Night Market this Friday, be sure to stop by my tent.

✨ Something completely new… and a one-of-a-kind piece.

Tomorrow I’ll be at the Cottonwood Falls Market in Nelson from 9:00–2:00, and I’ll be bringing this hand-painted silk triangular shawl with me.

This scarf has actually been sitting in my fibre stash since 2022. I originally bought it with plans to use it for nuno felting, but after moving into our new house, I’ve had to put wet felting on hold—too much water on our floors just isn’t worth the risk.

This morning, while I was spinning art yarn (my favourite time for ideas to surface), I remembered a middle-of-the-night thought I’d tucked away: What if I hand painted it instead?

So I stopped what I was doing and gave it a try.

I’m so happy I did. I love how the colours flowed across the silk, and it’s exciting to see an idea that’s been waiting for years finally come to life.

This is the only triangular shawl I’ll have. From what I’ve found, Canadian suppliers only carry square and rectangular silk blanks, and for now I’m choosing not to order from U.S. suppliers.

This empty spool holds 5,500 yards of thread… that’s just over 5 kilometres. 🤯🧵

And I’ve used every single yard of it.

That means I’ve spun over 5 km of textured art yarn using this one spool of thread alone (and that’s not even counting all the other colours and threads I use!).

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes details that people rarely see. Every skein of my art yarn begins with a fine thread like this, while a hand-dyed single wraps around it over and over until something completely unique emerges.
