Two little updates:

1. Thank you to our New West community! The kids are earning their own spending money for their trip and are hustling to make, quality test and sell some candy. They are ecstatic at how many people recognize that in this day and age, this is still a great life skill, so thank you all for your patience, kindness and generosity, especially to the two younger ones who are working on pronunciation and conquering their fears of being shy.

What’s a great way to enjoy ice cream in the cold months while… not being cold?! Sounds impossible unless you…drink melted ice cream?? Ew! No, there’s a better way, and that’s eating FREEZE DRIED ice cream!

What IS freeze dried ice cream? It’s actually food that astronauts eat because they don’t have access to freezers or fridges when they’re on a mission. It is ice cream that froze down all the way to -20F, and then underwent a process of vacuum freezing and sucking 99% of the moisture from it and then drying. Once complete, it has successfully been preserved to last 20+ years when packaged and stored properly (stored in a cool, dry place). Pretty cool! Tastes amazingly creamy, too, not to mention, super addictive!

There’s a lot of misinformation out there- it doesn’t help that a lot of overseas companies are listing their dehydrators as freeze dryers and posting them for sale like that. Can you picture ice cream melting on a dehydrator rack? It’s a silly thought, but that’s what happens when people post things on TikTok and other social media platforms just to get “likes” and follows. Some people even think freeze drying candy involves throwing it in the freezer and then in the clothes dryer, which, we can assure you, that is NOT how you get light, airy, crunchy candy!
