The mystery feather belongs to a Cedar Waxwing! 🪶
Ever wonder how waxwings got their name? Those bright red, waxy-looking tips on their wing feathers are actually what inspired it! They're formed from a wax like substance containing red carotenoid pigments, giving them the appearance of tiny drops of sealing wax.
Not all Cedar Waxwings have the same number of red tips. They generally develop more as they mature, and researchers believe they may play a role in signaling a bird's age and quality to potential mates. 🐦❤️
Pretty fascinating for such a tiny feather! 🪶
