The best corporate gifts tell a story.

When my client QuadReal Property Group asked for West Coast themed cookies that reflected Vancouver’s North Shore, I designed a collection inspired by the landscape, wildlife and outdoor lifestyle the area is known for.

Deep Cove. Grouse Mountain. Burrard Inlet. Bears, deer, kayaking and hiking. Each cookie became a small edible representation of the community they wanted to celebrate.

That’s what I love about creating custom corporate cookies.

I didn’t actually design this box for Halloween. But come on… 🖤

The Black Cottage was created as a year-round gift box, but add Halloween cookies and a little LED tea light inside and suddenly it becomes the cutest little haunted house.

It holds 6–7 standard size cookies or about a dozen minis, but you could just as easily fill it with candy, Halloween treats or an individual decorate-your-own cookie kit.

And if you’re a realtor, how cute would these be for client gifts, neighbourhood drop-offs or Halloween open houses?

Here’s the catch. I only made 50 sets for the US market and 25 sets for the Canadian market. Canadian inventory has yet to arrive. But US inventory has dropped. This was a test run for a new product, so once this batch is gone, it’s gone.

Sometimes the best seasonal packaging isn’t seasonal at all. 🎃

I seriously cannot believe it’s August already. Where did the summer go?!

I created this under-the-sea sugar cookie set for the sweetest little girl back in late June… and then it promptly got buried under the hundreds of photos and videos I’ve taken since. 🥴

Better late than never, right?

So you’re not wasting money on packaging where it adds no value, here’s the simplest way to know when to use a bakery box and when not to.

If your cookie business is built around affordable pricing or high-volume orders, or the cookies are being repackaged, added to swag bags, or delivered directly into an event setup, a sturdy bakery box may be exactly the right choice. In those cases, the box’s job is to protect and transport.

The problem begins when a baker markets decorated sugar cookies as a premium custom experience, charges accordingly, and then hands the finished order to the customer in packaging that makes it feel like ordinary baked goods.

A customer purchasing two dozen custom cookies for a birthday, baby shower, or wedding shower is not simply buying flour, butter, and icing. She is paying for the design, the personalization, the hours of skilled work, the convenience, and the feeling of bringing something special to an important occasion.

When she receives that order, believe me, she’s judging her purchase. We all do it. She is deciding whether it feels worth what she paid.

The packaging does not need to be extravagant. But it should reinforce the value of the cookies, not make them feel ordinary.

That does not mean every expensive cookie order needs presentation packaging. If the cookies are being repackaged, handled by an intermediary, or delivered straight into another fulfilment process, strong transport packaging may be all that is needed.

But when the paying customer is receiving the finished order, the packaging is part of the experience.

Your packaging needs to match what you are asking the customer to believe about your custom cookies.

Why are bakers still assembling cookie boxes?

I wanted packaging that made my cookies look like a premium gift, but I had absolutely no interest in turning box assembly into another job on my to-do list.

So when I designed Karentology packaging, I had one rule:

NO ASSEMBLY!

Push the sides together until you hear the click. That’s it. 🤩

There’s something extra special about creating custom birthday cookies that become part of a surprise.

Earlier this spring, I made cookies for a baby shower that Laura hosted. Her daughter Olivia loved them so much that she said she wanted decorated sugar cookies for her own birthday… but then completely forgot to remind her mom.

Good thing moms don’t forget the important things. ❤️

Laura secretly ordered these custom cat cookies for Olivia’s 11th birthday, with one very special request. Their newest family member, Boots, had to be included. She even used AI to create inspiration and I used those to create this set.

Hearing about Olivia and her friends’ reactions made all the hours worth it.

These cookies combined so many of my favourite techniques, including airbrushing, edible printing, metallic hand painting, and hand piping. Every cookie was designed just for Olivia and her love of cats, making this birthday celebration even more memorable.

I’m so grateful to have played a small part in such a thoughtful surprise. Happy 11th Birthday, Olivia! 🐈🎉
